And I think I will follow your lead - I'm going to sell my house, move to a crappy apartment in a bad part of town so I can get tough, sharpen my senses, and learn when to know when punks are not carrying any weapons.

It is nice for you to have a dream, but you should quit while you are behind.

I really don't understand why you are getting so upset over this. An incident happened in which I made a few punks regret messing with me. It's not the only time I've hit a car or gotten in an altercation, but it is certainly the most memorable. I was sharing my story on the board to provide another point of view. When people mess with me on runs, I mess back and it tends to work very well. But seriously, why are you getting so worked up?

Over the course of my running life I have had several run ins with drunken assholes in cars. I am rather large in the upper body for a runner so the encounters typically end with the offending drivers leaving the area in a rapid fashion.

Amateur Eater, I don't think he's getting worked up, Terry is just right. Yes you have a cool story but you could have easily ended up shot. That wouldn't matter if you're from a tough area or not if you're dead. Can you at least acknowledge that they could very easily have had a gun and you would have no idea?

Obviously, this is what you do if someone talks shit to you while running. If they stop nearby (red light, stop sign etc) you pick up the biggest rock you can find and fire it thru their rear window as hard as your skinny weak ass runner arms can. then, you take off running the other way as fast as you can, through people's yards, etc.

this is the perfect response, b/c they are being cowards (you have no hope of retaliation), so you respond with an equally cowardly move that packs 1000x as much force. it is awesome and you take very little risk. and you feel great for at least a week after doing it.

Runners rules of dealing with rude / dangerous drivers.

1. Ignore them unless you have a). easy access to an ample supply of good sized rocks for throwing at and breaking windshields. b). can throw like a man with a good fastball. c). have thought out your instant exit route from where you are at that moment. d). are not stupid enough to run them right back to your house. (Take them on a wild goose chase down some one way alleys past police hang outs or police stations or down a one way alley into a wall, with a pedestrian escape route.)

If you cannot think through and do the above, you are too stupid to be a runner on roads or streets.

Always, always, always have an exit if you choose to fight back against a car. They are in a car for God's sake and can simply run you over if they want to. I've never had to do this but I have been in close situations where I had to make some quick plans. If in a city situation and you can catch them at a red light they are pretty much at your mercy, barring no guns, if they are blocked in by other traffic. In the country, be prepared to go off road and make sure they aren't in a big 4 x 4 or they will come after you.

A rock through a window is the best situation so you can be, at least a small, distance from the vehicle. And Never, never, never lead them back to your house. I'm lucky in that I have a Highway Patrolman that lives 2 doors down, I would run to his house if I had to (or someone's house you don't like).

Best just to ignore them of course. Though if someone spit at me I would have a hard time not saying something.

They were scrubs. The car was a beat up late 80s Cavalier. It was a 4-way stop and I didn't see any cars coming or sitting. Halfway through the intersection and the horn blared, followed by the driver swearing at me. I stopped because I get pissed off when people mess with runners. Obviously, I'm a 30 year old professional so fighting ain't really in my bag anymore. Anyway, they were scrubs.

What I didn't consider was that as scrubs they could be totally wacked out on smack, meth, whatever. Anyway, I went out today and purchased a bow and arrow. That'll learn 'em.

When I was in 11th grade I got heckled by some high school kids from another school riding home on the bus. They threw a can of chew spit at me out the window. When the bus stopped the group of punks got off. I sprinted full speed and tackled one to the ground. Luckily my entire high school XC team was like 50 meters behind me. They got punked down pretty hard and the one guy ran home and told his mom. I got ISS for 3 days and couldn't go to practice for 2 weeks. It was totally worth it though.

I was one of the two guys that you mention. You are lying. You were the first one to start the altercation. Our F-you was in response to your provocation. Man up.

It's always the other guy, right? Let me see if I have this straight.

They were stopped at a red light, you were running by, one of them spit (are you sure he spit AT YOU? How do you know he was not just spitting out the window?).

You get angry, and provoke them by punching the car and calling them Fvckers?

You expect them not to follow you? You still think they were wrong?

They want to know what your problem is (Let's see, you punch the car and curse at them) and you respond by smashing up their car with a bat?

Then you admit it is not the only time you have gotten in altercations with motorists.

Sure cars have to yield to pedestrians but it is really sounding like you go out of your way to look for a reason to get ticked off at someone.

No, I was running and a car slowed down next to me. They rolled the window down, one of them hocked a loogie at me and they all proceeded to curse and laugh at me, then sped off down the road. However, they were stopped by the light, so I then hit the car and called the f a g g o t s, not fvckers. Then they followed me home, clearly looking for a fight. There were four of them so I got a bat to protect myself. Had there only been 1 or 2, I would have fought them knuckle to knuckle. I would assume that many runners have fought back at douchebag drivers, it doesn't mean I have anger management issues, it means I'm not a pushover.
