I've done several high altitude training stints. You only need 4-6 weeks (and the research backs this up, as long as she's iron sufficient). I'm willing to bet as a 5th year senior she will adjust much quicker than incoming freshmen.

How is Barringer an example of this? Barringer had a solid freshman year of XC, followed by a national title in the steeple in the spring. Barringer is a beast who needed only the aforementioned 4-6 weeks, if that.

It's not the altitude most people have trouble with in the CU program. It's the volume.

Allie McLaughlin, Laura Tremblay, and Laura Thweatt all came into the program from altitude. It would seem it's the volume that's creating the problems for them.

If Pixler can handle the volume, expect her to be doing fine for track in the spring.

It's the total load that's the problem, which is volume plus altitude.

If you look at Jenny's record at CU you will see that she went backwards at world XC Juniors from HS (35th) to freshman at CU (47th) the next year.

Wetmore himself has in the past told prospective recruits that it takes 2 years to adjust.

While I'd agree that the total load is important to consider, Wetmore tells in-state recruits it will take two years to adjust, too. Altitude isn't part of the adjustment for kids from Durango and Colorado Springs unless there's something to coming down 1000 feet to Boulder.

I think the results from Barringer's freshman cross country season and outdoor season trump the World XC Juniors results. You can easily have a race performance below your ability, but it's pretty difficult to have a race performance above your ability. Barringer was adjusted long before one year was up, and that from something like 20 feet above sea level.

Keep in mind, that Pixler most likely isn't coming to Colorado just to have one great track season at the collegiate level. If that was the goal, somewhere like Oregon might be a better fit. I'm guessing she's going to be in a place that supports aspiring young runners to make a career of it. Doing that is a multi-year process and won't hapeen in one season...but, rather, of the course of several years. Hoovis

I think that the 6+ months of buildup until outdoor will serve her well. Yes, there will be an adjustment, but as others have said, she's a 5th year, with consistent high-level training under her belt. I think she'll have a much easier time responding to the training than a girl coming straight out of high school where they were a star running 30mpw and winning everything.

Additionally, I wouldn't be surprised if Mark adjusts her workouts from time-to-time to focus on her background and/or strengths.

6 months is plenty enough time, "coach."

This couldn't be more wrong, it's neither. It's the intensity. People have observed this in Goucher and Ritz. Vaughn has provided testimony to it. Not enough of the runners take responsibility for running an appropriate level of intensity (or lack thereof) on easy days. It's really as simple as that. Neither altitude nor volume, nor a combination of the two, should kill anyone if they aren't running easy days too hard.

She's likely going to school to continue her EDUCATION. Not anything to do with continuing to run and train in CO beyond next year.

Also, she better listen to her new coach. Her workouts will be vastly different than those at SPU. Not necessarily the training but the workout data and scheduling. How much, how many, how fast, how often.

Recovery days will be important for Jessica, so hopefully she's not too accustomed to running fast on "easy" days. Don't want to see her with any more stress fractures.

Glad to see Jessica will still be running at the college level. There was thought that she would go to Oregon but for what ever reason, could not get into grad school.

You're right on Laura Thweatt. Although she has been injured, this spring was not one of those times. Laura Tremblay did make World XC, but was probably already injured by the time of that race and was pretty much done for the year at that point. Perhaps you know more about Allie than I do.
