I'm fairly sure it's Lagat that people overlook, not the guy that held the record for twelve years. In fact, I'd already forgotten that Lagat is the current record holder. He may have gotten under twice now that I think about it.
Give the guy some slack. 13:10 in his first 5k race of his first pro outdoor season. He far ahead of where his other white counterparts were during their progression to sub 13.

Regardless of the glass half-full people here, Galen Rupp ran an excellent, best non-African time, once again. This youngster is showing consistent improvement and has taken one more baby step in American move-up to the Africans. Other than this new group of Americans, who is doing better? As an aside, cannot wait till Andrew Wheating gets into his first pro race in Europe. Based on what his teammate AJ Acosta did today, Wheating may shock a few people in the coming weeks.

Agree with the poster who said he needs to step up. After all the others who have gone sub-13, his race was very disappointing. Dang, Sydney Maree ran 13:00 or 13:01 how many years ago? And he never had all the goofy, high-tech gimmicky equipment that Rupp has at his disposal.
I look at this from the Lebron James perspective. Will this time and Rupp's gradual improvement over the years bring him a World Championship or Olympic medal at some point? Probably not. He needs to step it up given the mega contract he has especially in these uncertain economic times. The shoe companies are not messing around these days.
I just watched this race on Universal----while a decent time, Rupp really fell apart over last 500m----also, does anyone know why he kept looking to his right the last few circuits down the homestretch------prob getting instruction but looked very odd

Actually, I think Solinsky is getting a huge pass on this board. Seemingly people are forgetting that he is a 5K runner who was on record as saying the Pre meet would be the pinnacle of his season. Rupp on the other hand is a 10K runner dabbling in the 5K, he has August and September targeted as the peak of his season, and basically ran the same time as Solinsky at PRE when you factor in the slower pace.

Even before opening this thread I new that oregon fans were gonna find a way to make this a 13:00 under different conditions. Congrats Rupp on your 4th season as "obviously a 13:00 shape runner." Wow, that's longevity.

Yes, a PR is good because you ran faster than you ever have before. But what if someone only takes 0.1 seconds off their 5k PR each season, year after year. Should they really be jumping up and down over that kind of progression, even if they technically ran a PR each season?

Obviously not a track "newbie". This is King99 in poor hiding away from his normal trialswatcher name. What a f'ing moron. Until today his "outdoor" pr was only 7 seconds faster than it was in HS. God he just opened with his first real 5k and you make ignorant statements like the above. Everyone knows based off his 27:10 that he has something better than 13:10 in him. He's run 27:10, that trumps anything he's done so far, and other than newly crowned solinsky, best American time EVER. Get a fukcing clue!
