um, actually he's right. It's NOT cool when Rupp closes in 4:00 for the final 1600m to win the NCAA 5000m in 14:04. It IS cool when Bekele closes in 4:00 for the final 1600m to set an olympic record in the 5000m at 12:57. I can't believe people are actually arguing that this was tactical etc. There is a difference if the races are slow or not. Bekele's 4:00 1600 matters, rupps doesn't because it's 12:57 vs 14:04 (a time that a bunch of college kids can get vs something only 4 americans are able to do).

Do you really think Bekele would've run 12:57 in Rupp's shoes? Unless he's being paid a large amount of money (world record attempts) to go for time, Bekele exclusively goes for the win.

So wait what point are you trying to prove? Do you agree with the poster of this thread or are you saying that not only was rupps closing speed stupid, but Bekele's closing speed was stupid as well? Even if the latter was your point, all I was trying to do was agree with everyone that it's slightly more impressive closing fast in a world class time than a semi-decent college time regardless of who the runner is. 12:57 is still world class no matter what.

Yeah, especially when Bekele ran a 72 second lap in that 12:57 Olympic Record. Amazing.

This meet was bad time wise for distance runners (heat and wind will do that) but pretty good on the sprinters & throwers (two 47's in the hurdles, 19.7's in the 200m, long jump over 27', women's HJ 6'8+). That heat is GOOD for the explosion events!!

Pre Meet will be worth the wate!!

The sprints were terrible.

Dix did decent in the 100 and Spearmon did well (even though it was wind-aided) in the 200, but that was it as far as anything that could be considered remotely 'good' for sprinting performances.

Good Lord is right. This was a great tactical race for the winner and whoever thinks they finished better than they should. Time was clearly irrelevant here. This type of race is tactically no different to someone who takes it out fast and wins that way.

Now, as a crowd-pleaser there's a big difference! But running is a selfish sport.....

I hate how the word pathetic is bandied around on this board. The only reason this race would go ~3:35 pace is if someone thought that they would have a better chance at a higher finish if they led (and suffered the consequences of leading). That might happen if, say, Emmanuel was in the race. Obviously no one thought that they would have a better chance if they led, so it went slow. Some guys might run better off a quick pace (eg. Tegenkamp) but he may have not thought the pace would benefit him if it was him who was leading. Or some of the guys made tactical blunders, who knows.

Some guys (IMO Torrence) benefited. Funny, I would have picked Manzano over Lomong in this scenario.

Morceli didn't run as fast - 51.55 - on his way to a 3:32 in Tokyo. Slacker.

high schoolers run tactically too and still open faster than 2:15. even in my league.

I didn't say it was the most impressive last 400 of a 1500 I've been, but it is the fastest I've seen. El G split 51.91 in Athens in '04.
