Please enlighten me, drop the names of the athletes in the distance-road races who are making over $500-750,000 per year as you claim. Yes there are some sprinters who still have contracts in this range, but the distance runners both male and females with Guarentees of this amount can be counted on one hand.

very small list, but i cant think of any other distance runners, heck even asafa powell one of the top 3 sprinters in the world who has been running excellent just had his salary cut from 750k to 300k.

Then why do Hansons guarantee $100k to any sub 32 min female? Are they overpaying?

The Hanson brothers did a video interview (like 15-20 min total - but comes in 2 parts) up in boston.

they talked a lot about brian sell, the books distance project ... BUT ALSO - and what is really cool - is that they announced that they have secured guaranteed 100,000 salaries for athletes that meet these requirements:

Men, sub-28:00 in the 10,000m or sub-2:11 in the marathon; Women, sub-32:00 in the 10,000m or sub-2:31 in the marathon.

Hansons are friggin awesome and great for this sport

That's my point exactly. Imagine what would happen for Under Armor when Koll breaks the American 10k record for the women. If she's suited in Under Armor, or whatever, that company is going to get a boost. She will break the AR in the 10k btw

Koll is by far the best American runner, male or female, coming out of college this year at any distance over 1500 meters. She's smart, articulate, attractive, and wholesomely Midwestern, and she's going to be a veterinarian. She's worth more than a few bucks to a sponsor.

Koll will obviously get some sort of decent contract, but I have to agree that she probably won't break the bank. I think companies make their decisions based on more than just PRs -- they look more generally at the athlete's track record. Someone with identical PRs to Koll but who won (or was top three) at Foot Locker, competed at World Junior XC, made an immediate impact in college and so on might command a higher premium. Koll sort of reminds me of Scotty Bauhs -- someone who made incredible strides in the last couple years of college, enough to make a pro career possible, but not enough to convince you that they'll be contending for international podium finishes.

(Of course, Koll could well continue progressing and run 30:00 for 10K. But in a game of probabilities, you bet more heavily on someone who's been a winner at every level.)

Also, it's worth noting the difference between base salary and take-home. If you're a track runner, subtract your agent's cut, your travel and accommodation expenses to get to Europe and so on, your therapy bills, etc. If you're a road runner, add the prize money you pick up, particularly on the U.S. championship circuit (but give up your dreams of Olympic medals except in the marathon), plus appearance fees if you run well. So depending on their approach, someone with a $50k base salary could be taking home $20k or $200k.

Good points , well said. The past pays little. The shoe companies pay for the future.

Nice kid , mid-west , ok nice , veterinary school not a positive while running.

Support base ? Nike OTC has built the model that others need to strive for.

Track racing , x-country all nice but dont mean much unless she's doing it competitively at a world class level. Roads and marathoning give dividends back that are tangible to the shoe company.

Hopefully her agent does not just chase dollars like a UA deal ? They have to get runable shoes first ( remember Fila ).

What you are not realizing or at the very least sharing is that this $100,000 guarentee is not based entirely off of their running. It is the Hanson brothers' belief that if a runner hits the standards they have created they should make over 100k per year, however this is not just through sponsorship, but also prize money and apearence fee, both of which Koll will also be eligible for.

Even more important however, is that if a runner fails to earn 100k through running alone, they are given enough hours in one of the brothers' running stores to earn the remainder of the guarentee in that fashion.

please do not think that the Hansons have secured 100k from Brooks and the other sponsors to pay each runner hitting those standards a "salary"

That is 100% NOT true. Hours working in the stores has nothing to do with the $100k guarantee. Brian Sell worked in the stores for additional dollars above and beyond the $100k guarantee. Desi Davila does NOT choose to work in the stores (as it is not mandatory) and it has no effect on her $100k guarantee.

You are missing a point. If a sub 32 minute 10k girl has earned $80k through prize money, appearence fees etc. throughout the course of a year but is not on track to make the 100k guarentee the Hansons would give this runner enough hours in the store to earn the additional $20k. Not sure this has happened but when the plan was originally put forth, that was the deal.

Again. YOU ARE WRONG. If a person makes $80k then they recieve an additional $20k at years end. It has nothing to do with working in the stores. I know this for a fact. Desi does not and has never worked in the stores. Working in the stores is 100% optional.

Do the shoe companies really believe that I'm going to buy a pair of shoes from their company because someone (awesome) like Lisa Koll ran fast in their shoes/gear? I wear whichever shoes feel best while running in them (or that are most affordable). I mean, I'm glad they pay to support these runners, but it doesn't really affect my choices. But maybe I'm an unusual case.
