Just an anecdote here, but I moved to a new house about 5 years ago and it has a long linear trail nearby. An old railroad bed, with a surface I'd describe as being like a really good cinder track.
My calves were killing me for 4 years before I realized it might be running on this soft trail that was causing it. I returned mostly to the roads and my calves go better.
In my view, the issue wasn't the soft surface, it was that the trail itself was a little loose, so there was a bit of a slip backwards for each stride. That little bit was enough to stress my calves.
Anyway, I think soft surfaces are a good idea, but be careful that they are hard packed enough or you might experience what I did.
