I found the race video quite entertaining. Sit and kick races are fun to watch. Does anyone remember the World Indoor 1500 final from a few years ago? Didn't they go out in something like 2:30?
Guys in that race have a future in the Big 10 Meet.
Yeah they do run the olympic final almost that slow. I am pretty sure in 92 they took it out in about 65 (Slower than the woman) before closer in ~50.

There's only one Great One and it isn't the big-mouth jerk who couldn't hold onto his bronze in the only race of his life that really mattered. He turned it into a "guts race" alright, but it was the guy kicking from behind that had the guts. And he set the stage for a whole town that can't win anything (unless they cheat).

Lol, you have no idea. Half All of those guys are sub 4:15 and 7 of those guys are sub 4:10. Not to count all of the other california runners who can run 4:20. A league in Southern california had 6 guys at sub 4:20 at their league finals. That's a league of 6 schools.

As for the 1600, races develop in a way that individual runners cannot readily control. Taking a slow pace fast for 1000m is as much a guarantee of failing to win as getting outkicked in a tactical race. Remember, none of the 'not great kickers' had a lot better credentials than the other guys. If you are 6th less than a second out of first it is not clear that you made bad choice, ex ante.

This was a stupid race. Whoever was the guy that slowed it up basically was handing the race to Gedyon. With 8:56, 1501 @ Woodward Park, and a 1:51 800 to his credit, slowing this race down essentially was surrendering him the title.
Olson, grow a pair and go after it like you did at MOC as a JR to break the 3200 record, seriously, what a stupid race, waste of my time

i haven't watched the race since seeing it live, but if i remember correctly, they took off and ran the first 180 pretty hard, and then all of a sudden it slowed big time. but like you, i wouldn't blame the slowing of the pace on one guy. they all put on the brakes at that point.
