My bad. Apparently Centrowitz did run the 5K and dropped out. Not sure what the story was there.

To answer another poster, the reason we are talking about the distance runners is because that is what the thread is about. I don't care what the team scores were for the meet. I'm not talking about the meet as a whole. Notice the title of the thread.

1. First off if your not talking about the meet as a whole why mention Stanford would have won without a certain UO athlete?

2. Second I'm assuming you mean Eaton (if I'm wrong please correct me) but either way he is not a distance athlete so if you are concerned with only distance runners why mention him?

3. His total of 39.25 points (only gave him 1.25 as a leg of the relay) takes UO to 129.25 which is still more the Stanford's 92. Yes they would gain some points but I doubt it would be enough to win.

4. If we are removing an athlete from UO do we get to from Stanford.

5. I am not partial to either team just distance running (I go to pitt, obviously i must watch other teams to see real distance runners)

Having said all that both TEAMS competed well. Yes, Stanford's distance did much better then UO's on the track but that doesn't matter much seeing as track isn't a distance sport, XC is.

I sat amongst Stanford fans at the PAC-10 meet and they are a more sophisticated, thoughtful group than the GO DUCKS, Ducks Ducks Ducks!!!! fan. And I am a UCLA fan.

So, this thread is somehow supposed to knock Oregon because Stanford has two great distance runners on their team?

As an Oregon fan, and I think most Oregon fans would agree, I am impressed with both Chris Derrick and Garrett Heath (and also Jake Riley). These guys are talented and hard-working (and good gusy) whom we respect as distance runners, and are happy that they did so well at the Pac 10's. Galen Rupp may have beaten these guys everytime they met, but that is irrelevent...Galen was a senior and these guys were freshmen. Oregon fans are happy to let them shine, wish both of them were ducks instead of Cardinals, but that's how it is. For LR idiots to try to start something is just foolsh....the Derrick/Heath and Oregon relationship is one of respect for each other.

Good post but Garrett Heath graduated last year. Elliott Heath, his younger brother is now running at Stanford.

I think at the heart of the issue is a lot of people want to see Oregon fail and this thread is a by product of that. I think a lot of it stems from the perceived arrogance of their fans and even of some within the program. Even without that factor the simple fact that Oregon newspapers are the only ones really even covering the sport anymore means that they get more attention than anyone else. This (over)saturation is bound to bring out some haters (see: Yankees, Lakers, Patriots).

Very thoughtful post....also, Elliott it is (Garrett was a good one too). I understand the perceived arrogance factor, it is a natural response.

Thankfully, the Oregon newspapers give a rip about track and field (most places, you wouldn't even know that a track meet had taken place). It seems to me that track fans should rather work on getting newspaper coverage of the sport in their local areas rather than "hate on" one of the few areas that covers our sport.

Agreed about coverage of T&F! I totally applaud Oregon newspapers for devoting pages to T&F news; here in LA it is a tidbit and when they do write about it I respond w/ effusive emails as to encourage more than a paragraph. Apparently, T&F was heavily covered 25 years ago in the LA Times because the owner of the paper loved Track.

We need to bring T&F back to the mainstream and get above NASCAR and Horse-Races; that kills me.

Coaches from the big D1 schools in urban areas need support. There are many awesome stories out there about T&F athletes, programs, coaches, colleges.

Stanford ripped all cross season until it really mattered. When Vin was at stanford, Oregon gave them a run at conference and regional meets but Stanford always distanced themselves at NCAA's.

This is NOT a rip on the current stanford runners, just a wake up to the OP.

Oregon could have raced guys differently and had different outcomes. Wheating could have doubled for one. McNamara (13:45 guy) could have just run the 5K instead of having to do 2 1500's in his first meet back in months.

Point is a team thinking professionally maxes points at conference in the best way they can PROVIDED it fits in line to the bigger picture which is several weeks away.

Saw Chris at the illinois state cross country meet when he ran at nequa. he was a f***in beast ran a 13:55 3 mile as a senior. it was sweet hes got a BRIGHT future watch for him. Go Chris!

This "hate" you speak of has nothing to do with the publicity that UO Guard or whatever they're called give UO. They have every right to talk all about UO and nobody else. It's the Oregon runners or fan base that disregard anything great another runner does from another school. You speak of respect, yet Oregon never gives any. They are quick to dismiss anybody elses efforts. Like oh the guy Rupp used to beat? Not verbadum but You can see where I'm going. Just look at all the threads started about UO runners and how many for anybody else. No it's not everyone else intrigued by UO it's UO being thrown out there by UO.

I didn't say Oregon didn't do well at the meet. Obviously they did. It's evident by how many threads were started about each individual on the roster. I was simply trying to give credit to other runners outside of UO.

Martin Smith was fired after winning the PAC 10 for 1 reason. THEY DID NOT WIN WITH DISTANCE RUNNERS. Now the hypocritical University of Nike is called a complete team.
