If Salazar retired tomorrow, what does NIKE do?

NIKE and Salazar didn't need to tell anyone that their goal with the AR. Any intelligent observer of Rupp's senior year should have known that he was beyond AR shape, and what was coming as soon as Rupp ran a 10k this year. So why bother denying it, make a liar of yourself, and fail at hiding what can't be hid?

So Rupp lost one race, there are a host of great runners whose legacy is they beat Rupp in one race, they celebrate, while Rupp does his post-race workout afterwards.

Is this the sort of rubbish you need to write to make the front page?

Why do you think that they hired Jerry?

You need to start thinking about 3 distance runners who will all make the team like Jerry's 3 that qualified for Worlds last year.

Jerry would bring Dave Smith on board to reconnect with Fernandez (if he proves himself a bit more).

Jerry then gets a steeplechase assistant to have a couple more Olympians in an easy event (Quintana or Gary or Rowlands).

Also considering if Webb and Wheating are post-collegiately training could mean Gags return. Cook is more a control freak than Jerry; not sure that would work out?

The only reason anyone is saying it was a "poor strategy" is because Solinsky performed beyond everyone's expectations. This is how the race looks without Solinsky:

1. Race gets billed as AR attempt.

2. Rupp takes pace after (sub-par) rabbit drops

3. Rupp pushes pace alone

4. Rupp sets AR in 27:10

5. People think, wow, that AlSal really knows his athletes -- he knew his runners so well he could claim they would get an AR.

Of course all this is true, but now people are yapping about how he has poor strategy. Ya can't win. Solinsky and Rupp ran well.

As far as his other results: Ritz runs AR after being sharpened up by Salazar, Kara Goucher Olympic medal, and consistently solid performances by everyone else. Why the hate?

Kara Goucher doesn't have an Olympic medal, she has a medal from the 2007 World Championships.

I dunno, I heard that Jerry has a lot of athletes he's coaching (like >20?), it's essentially Nike Farm up north. Alberto has a smaller pop.

And agree about Cook, but he and Gags are not going back to OR, they would need to find others...

If Salazar was done Jerry would take the top spot? I think at this point Jerry has the top spot don't you think? Jerry already has 2 guys that are better than Salazar's one in Rupp and might already have 2 more on his group.

I guess they\'d get another Mexican distance guy to replace Al. Tony Sandoval is about ready to retire from Cal and might be looking to move to a cheap area like Portland. What about Joaquim Cruz. He\'s living down in the capitol of track (Los Angeles) but might want to come back to the Willamette Valley. There\'s other Mexican candidates too.

The missing piece who isn't doing a thing is Rowlands at OTC (only highlight was Symonds who Gags still coaches). I agree with the above poster who says they need to get a coach who specializes in steeplechase. Bring over Quintana and have him bring Alcorn and get Nelson, Morse, and Bruce going again.

ah, mark rowland has been there just over a year so to say he "isn't doing a thing" is a bit much. systems and relationships take time to develop. and "a steeplechase specialist", mark has a bronze in the steeple from seoul 1988 but that probably isn't good enough to help coach steeplers.

I have no idea if Rowland is a good coach, but the fact that he was a good steepler himself has little to do with how well he can coach the event.

If you want to make the point that he knows how to coach the steeple, point to athletes he's coached to run the steeple...

...and i suspect he is quite capable of successful steeple coaching. he wasn't selected to replace gags because he just happened to pass through eugene, that isn't why he got the job.

make the point that when the steeplers named left wetmore, conover and quintana they retained enough knowledge to progress steadily....

fwiw, all those coaches are quite good. careers get off course. salazar took a while to get his system to work. schumacher needed a little time at unc to get his feet wet. systems and coaches need time is my point.

Rowland 100% coaches Nick at this point.
