Here is what I can piece together.
4600m Solinsky gets stitch (for about 7 laps)
6600m Rupp takes lead
7500m Stitch finally goes away for Solinsky
9000m Solinsky moves even with Rupp
9100m Solinsky takes over from Rupp
10,000m Race ends
Rupp leads for about 2500m
Solinsky leads for 900m
Others lead for 6600m
Thus, it is not as though Rupp lead for most of the race, or even a vastly higher proportion than Solinsky. In fact, when Rupp picked it up he put a struggling Solinsky into danger of punting, and an even faster pace might have done it. Also, note that Solinsky said that he had a massive blister that was really uncomfortable.
Rupp did the orchestration but it is a race, not a simple time trial. Less work than last time here for Rupp? Rupp is improving every year and he is not done. This record is NOT out of his reach. Run right he could have run 27:04 or so Saturday but probably not 26:59. However, within a year I think he can be ~27:00
Not only did Rupp break the American Record and yet lose, isn't this the second race in a row for Rupp where the same thing has happened? Wasn't his last race the 5,000 indoors where he broke the old AR (his own previous record) but lost to Lagat?
Better not tell Rupp that the world record is 26:17. That will really piss him off.

Simply put, this record wouldn't have happened without Galen. He set up the rabbits, and then he took the lead and kept pressing when it really started to hurt. I know everyone loves to hate on Galen, but the fact is he made this American Record happen.

Not sure what you mean by "the same thing has happened". If it is only "broke old AR and lost" then yes, that's true.
But if you mean that the overall experience is in any way similar for Rupp or for running fans then no, these were very different events. Nobody really expected Rupp to beat Lagat, AR or no AR. And very few expected Solinsky to beat Rupp. So, for Rupp, losing to Lagat is basically "no kidding", while losing to Solinsky is probably much more difficult emotionally.

Plus when Rupp raced the 5K with Lagat, he wasn't forced to lead when it hurts most and when nobody wants to, but when he got beat by Solinsky that's exactly what happened. A bitter pill to swallow indeed.
I'm not sure I understand why everyone is trying to "get into Rupp's head." How can the guy not be happy? He thought he was capable of setting the AR, chose the venue that optimized his opportunity, and went out and did it -- forcing the issue when it needed to be forced. He got a major PR, which confirms his training is on track, and he has plans for the summer. And he's young. Now he's probably motivated even more. He simply got beaten by a scintillating performance that no one saw coming.
b. bulletAMEN same thing I said on another thread pertaining to which race Solinsky shoud race in 2011/2012. I also pointed out Galen made the race and held it together by encouraging the 1st pacemaker to speed up and then he led in slightly windy conditions when the 2nd pacemaker duties ended. Much respect for GALEN RUPP and Chris Solinsky!.....

Did Rupp say anything cocky before the race about what he would do and how he would smash a record? NO!! Did Salazar? NO!!! His comments where blown up by the media,...and there you have it again. The only thing anybody could criticise is that they were "soo" picky about where they'd run it and that Nike is pulling the strings. But remember,...no money,...no records.
Without Nike paying for the whole deal with pacemakers and whatnot,...no record!!

Maturity and respect for others on letsrun? Hats off to you for this post.
Both should be commended for fine performances. Solinsky for the AR/and sub-27 and Rupp for AR level as well. I am sure both are capable of pushing that time down another notch during the summer track season. Hats off to both. Well done - We are proud of you!!!!

Jeeze you're tarded...Rupp DID NOT break the American record...CS did. You may hae seen it on the front page?? The American record is/was 26.59 when Rupp finished. His goal was to break the record..he did not...so yeah he is probably pissed. He sat out to break 27.13 which he did and set a p.r. though. Good job just keep working and he may one day break the A.R.

This is why Rupp will run 26:49 when he puts it together at the end of the season and peaks correctly... just perfect example of power, form, and efficiency..

To be honest, if Nike really had the video cameras out there, I think they were expecting more than breaking Mebs record. I think they were expecting something more historic like Rupp being the first white guy under 27:00. I seriously don't think Rupp and Salazar would have talked with that much confidence about beating the record going in if they didn't feel like it was a forgone conclusion and something bigger was a strong possibility. I also don't think they would have been as fussy about where to race, I really don't. They didn't announce sub 27, but why would they?
Rupp said he had been exceeding every workout since indoor worlds. Rupps workouts are insane. I think they thought he was going to do it, and obviously they didn't think Chris would do it over him.
This is why Rupp is very dissappointed.
There were no stories in the Register Guard and a little one in the Oregonian. That means some pretty utter dissapointment.
Galen Rupp is a pansy. Chis Solinsky is the man. This is always how is has been, and how it will be.
Rupp is dumping Salazar and joining Hudson.
