But the mere carrying has nothing to do with over-reacting.

Over-reacting is what one does with the gun, not the mere act of carrying it. No different than taking your cell phone into a remote area or buckling your seat belt before driving. Is the driver who buckles up "over-reacting" to the fear of an accident or is that driver taking a reasonable precaution for their own safety? Odds are heavily in favor that driver will never need the seat belt, but why take the chance and be unprepared in the event of an accident?

No different with concealed carry. Merely a safety precaution that prepares one to deal with a situation that, while unlikely to happen, could be life-threatening if it did. In that manner, the firearm is nothing more than another piece of safety equipment for a situation that the possessor hopes never occurs but is nonetheless prepared to deal with, for his/her protection and for those around them.

I see coyotes while running about once every two weeks, they often stop a bit of a distance away (40-50ft) and check me and my dog out, but unlike the wimp Rick Perry I just keep going and the coyote runs off. The guy carries a gun for snakes? Rick Perry has proven himself a coward.

The fact that so many of you question someone who would carry a gun when adverse conditions might occur, proves how much a pussy the white male has become.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned in this story was Rick Perry had a run in with a feral hog a while back. Wild hogs are a problem in Texas and they can kill a pit bull. Its a non-issue but the media knew there were plenty of limp-wristed pole smokers that would get their Ricky Martin tighties outta whack by reporting this.

I agree. Coyotes are completely harmless, dog or no dog. If the guv makes any move toward them, they flee. And it's not practical to try to shoot a snake.

This governor is a huge pussy.

I run in areas with bear, coyote, and snakes all the time, and have never considered carrying any sort of weapon nor would I ever, ever need one.

You know what the most dangerous animal is? A dog. Dogs aren't afraid of humans the way wild animals are, so they're more willing to attack. Most dogs are poorly trained and have inattentive owners who don't believe their dog would ever harm someone. The problem is that their dog isn't used to seeing someone running 6 or 7 minute pace and so it gets excited and wants to play or attack. Not fun.

If I could shoot every dog that chased me, maybe then I would think about carrying a gun. However, I'm not a huge pussy like texas guv, so I can just turn, face the dog, yell, and usually that confrontation is over.

The story seems a bit suspicious to me. It's plausible but I find it hard to believe he's out running in Austin with a gun regularly because he's afraid of coyotes. Perhaps he did see a coyote and thought, "hmmm I'll go shoot it and it will help me get reelected." Perry like most politicians is pretty good with the pr.

If he gets prosecuted for shooting an animal threatening his dog however, I bet he might like the attention he gets.

Rick Perry is a tool. That being said there are Rattle Snakes in the Austin area, so it may not be the worst idea to carry a gun if you're out on the trails. You can't pick up a Rattle Snake and move it.

Last fall there was a news story out of the area of a man who was the target in a high speed chase. He eventually ditched the car like they always do. He tried to get away on foot and was bitten by a Rattle Snake. I bet he wished he had a gun.

That's my thought. If you are so paranoid that you feel the need to carry a handgun while going for a jog because you are afraid of snakes, then you are the pussy. I handle snakes, venomous and non-venomous, for a living. And I don't use guns to do it. Now, I can understand carrying protection if you have your small dog with you while jogging through an area with lots of coyotes. But it seems like gun enthusiasts are often just itching for a reason to kill something, and I doubt this coyote was actually a threat. Granted, I wasn't there. But I would bet money this was the case.

I am a gun owner and believe in gun rights strongly but I too am calling BS on this story. Sounds like the Gov wants free publicity and is getting it.

And sometimes I mow my lawn with a steamroller. Thank God, I have a steamroller.

I ran in Arizona for years and happened on tons of snakes (even rattlesnakes! The king-kong of the wild reptiles!). Solution to grave snake problem: toss a small rock or stick at snake. Snake decides to move off trail. I continue running. I never actually needed to blow it to bits with a hollow-tipped bullet. But I guess I am a BIG PUSSY.
