i stole a Latin exam in high school roughly 15 years ago right off my teachers desk. looked up the answers at home with the book open and just memorized the answers to the multiple choice. placed it back on the teachers desk couple days before the exam. teacher was such an air-head she didnt really know nor could she prove anyone had taken a copy of it. one day it just mysteriously appeared on her desk after i returned it there....so never was caught. got an "A" on the final exam - not an "A+" because some of the answers I looked up at home with the book open were wrong haha.
I still regret it though. The way I look at it I was headed in the wrong direction in my life trying to be something I wasn't. so that's sort of how i justify it.
So while I don't condone this stuff I can see sort of why people do it ...of course in end you hurt yourself in that when you take a higher level class you dont know jack. Luckily this subject matter was just Latin and isnt something I care about down the line. If I could go back I would have just not taken Latin or settled for a C in the class. I thought I HAD TO GET INTO AN IVY JUST LIKE MY DAD in order to succeed in life...
You pay the tuition.
You are the customer.
If you're going to actually contribute anything to society and have a healthy sense of self-worth you can't cheat. Eventually it will always come back to bite you - not because you'll get caught and anything will happen to you (although that could happen), but because chances are your conscience and esteem get wrecked, and because you are not genuinely good at anything you do you can't perform and you're likely in the wrong field/career.
I don't think criminals and cheaters are doomed for life. Rehabilitation/Good morals is possible. For me given how successful I am now no one would ever suspect I ever did something this evil. So I'm just saying have a heart here and try to understand why someone is "cheating." Sometimes they think it's justified because the system for advancement and achievement in our society is unfair, so all they are doing is getting even. In my case I found out I had ADHD years later after the exam stealing incident. So I learned more about myself and turned a negative thing into a positive thing.
I'd bet everyone on here has "cheated" at least once. Who hasn't faxed a paper to a parent/friend for proofreading? Is this cheating?
So our society decided to give me 100% extra time on all exams, including the SAT. Is this cheating?

Chances are if you're doing anything you don't want your professor to know about in preparation of your assignments, you're "cheating." Plagarizing is bad because some college professors with big final term papers will regularly use sites like turnitin.com and will find it.
What if you hire an outside professor or high school teacher to come to your residence as a "tutor" who helps you so much he/she practically writes most of the paper for you? Of course You won't get caught. But Is this "cheating?"
What if you have an older brother who's a genious at proofreading and he helps you organize arguments, maybe add a few arguments, and add a page or two to your long term paper. Is this "cheating?"

I don't know about where you went to school, but my profs ENCOURAGE us to discuss papers with friends and get people to proof-read them. As long as you don't just copy a friend's suggestions because you trust the friend, it's fine. Getting input from others is a great way to learn how to improve an essay, especially if you get multiple opinions and think about them before editing.
you guys are all anal chimps. Think for yourself. It isnt that big a deal.
I have no problem if he is thrown out of school and he prob will be, but he wasnt trying to hurt anyone and he didnt hurt anyone other than himself. He was lazy and stupid, not malicious.
Back off. Everyone has cheated to some extent in the past. I know I have.

What kind of dumb shit comment is this.
To the OP, I hope they kick your ass out of school, and keep this semester's tuition for good measure. You should be forced to work at McDonalds for the next 2 years. I'll bet a paycheck you don't pay shit for school and your parents shell out every dime. You are pathetic.
Engineers all cheat constantly on homework. I have personally copied someone else's work a couple of times, but I don't like doing it. I know a civil engineer who almost never did his own work. We also use solutions manuals. Hope this makes you feel safe!
The best is when teachers give take home tests. I guarantee you at least 3/4 of the class are cheating their asses off.

Nope. You pay the tuition to have an *opportunity* for an education.

Thank you. Someone gets it.

Agreed. They also make take-home tests harder than an in-class test, so asking your classmate, "Hey I don't want to cheat off you, but what did you get in the end for #4? I just wanted to make sure I did it right so let's cross-check."
Pretty shady but that's the deal with take-homes. Take homes really really mean kids will bend the rules. You have to be real careful though because there have been cases where if answers on a take-home are similar some professors will even go to great lengths - calling the IT dept at your college and tracing through your school email to find your conversations with others regarding the test problems.
Well done my friend. A big 10/10.

I had a take home final last term - did not cheat, and got a good grade.
My mid-terms in one class now are all take homes. We've only had one so far, but I even stuck to the 2-hour time limit on it. The farthest I bent the rules was having iTunes playing through my stereo when the instructions said computers were not allowed. 84% is good enough for me, so I see no reason to cheat in the future.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd rather not be that cynical while I'm still a student. I'm not competing with my classmates for grades (no curves), so it doesn't hurt me if they break the rules. I just won't help them do it.

depends on your professor's guidelines. on a creative writing piece they may encourage a classmate to proofread. on a take-home exam for a physics course, it may be something you wouldn't want your professor to know about you doing.
That's why I said bottom line is, ask yourself if it's something your professor would be OK with if he COULD monitor you 24/7 in your preparation of assignments. obviously he cant do this. But If the answer is yes, you're not cheating. If it's less than a yes (or a no id probably be dead in the water if he knew about me doing this), then you're probably umm..."cheating." ...Most colleges now encourage you to clarify with the professor what's FAIR and what's not in the preparation of assignments. sometimes it's not obvious.
even for the "Little Miss Goodie Two Shoes" it's sometimes not obvious....which is why clarify with the professor WHEN THE ASSIGNMENT IS GIVEN TO YOU what's fair game and what's not in preparation of assignments
"Think for yourself. It isnt that big a deal."
yes--if only people COULD think for themselves--but most of history shows that the mass of people need OTHERS to do the hard work for them--
Sorry, but your assumption that "everyone has cheated...in the past" is not true. Basically ur just looking for justification for ur own shortcuts in life.
i can say that i never cheated at athletics OR academics in HS or college--Then and now, i would sooner turn in a "C" paper 3 days late from my own brain and hand, rather than an "A" paper from plagarism. I would sooner be the 7th man on an undistinguished XC team, than an all-american on PED'S.
If you're on drugs in sports or if your so lazy and so stupid that u can't write ur own assignments in school---U SUCK SHIT> nothing "anal" about it---its called having a sense of whats right and whats wrong in life.

Agreed. You do deserve a good *ss-kicking - if not from anyone else but from yourself.

It's never black and white.
Cheating is... - hypothetically if your activites in preparation of assignment were 100% transparent with your professor (could see through walls) and then you knowingly/unknowingly violated his/her rules under which you were supposed to follow through to completion - no matter how stupid his/her rules seem.
when you think back to your schooling days, you may NEVER know whether or not you have cheated. Could be like gross negligence in not understanding what's game and what isn't.
If you wore a baseball hat by accident to an exam for non-religious reasons, you can busted for CHEATING! OMG OMG he's a CHEATER!!! cmon...
You're fine. Don't worry. In fact, you're vice-presidential material.
