How many miles a week did you run in high school, and what were your 400, 800, 1600, and 3200 times...as well as what even did you consider your best?
We didn't run miles; we ran minutes.
440y = 52.3 (s)
880y = 2:00.1
1 mile = 4:47 (i)
2 mile = 10:18 (i)
Def best at the half.
12-15 miles per week: 400-47 800-1:53 1600-4:23
400-53
800-2:00
1600-4:22
3200-9:21
Mileage:
fr- didnt run yet
so- started running during track, maybe up to 30
jr-40
sr-60s average. some 70s but the bulk was 55ish
400: 51
800: 2:00
1600: 4:35
5K XC: 16:42
My high school team ran 25 miles a week including warmups.
Absolutely zero ability. Got up to 100 mpw as a senior (in the early 80's), avg was more like 60-70. Ran 2:06 and 4:46.
Kept running in college. Averaged more like 70-80. Ran 4:23 and 14:58.
9th/10th grade = 15-20 mpw
11th/12th grade = 20-40 mpw for track & 40-70 mpw for xc
400- 54
800- 2:02
1600- 4:27
3200- 9:56
5k (xc)- 16:26
All pr's are from 12th grade
Oh yeah, 1600 was best event.
400: 58
800: 2:14
1600: 4:59
3200: 11:25
XC: 19:11
I ran 40 mpw twice a year. Averaged 20 mpw in outdoor and 30 mpw in XC and indoor, including warm-up and cooldown. Championship season was 15 mpw. My best event would probably have been the 1600 if I focused on it, but I usually ran the 800m. I dropped 8 seconds off my 1600 PR between districts and NSO's and I probably could have dropped a few more if there was another week left.
I'm a Senior in HS right now, hopefully to be running D3 next year (if I get into the university).
Freshman:
0mpw Summer- 21:45 5k PR
0mpw Winter- didn't even do track
Sophmore:
0mpw Summer- 17:48 5k PR
0mpw Winter- 5:15 1600 11:05 3200 2:16 800
Junior:
30mpw Summer- 17:24 5k PR
40mpw Winter- (HUGE jump in PRs) 4:38 1600 10:00 3200 2:05 800
Senior:
(maxed out at) 100mpw Summer- 16:10 5k PR
(probably maxing out at) 95mpw Winter- (PR Goals) 4:25 1600 9:30 3200 1:58 800
In my freshman and sophmore years, I SUCKED big time. We had a crapy coach who has us running the same workout as the girls. No summer schedule or summer running was even talked about. Junior year we got a new coach and I started running some, but still not much at mostly 35mpw. In the winter, I busted my ass some more and saw HUGE PRs which motivated me into my summer of senior year (this past summer). I became very serious about training and maxed out at 100mpw. This led to a HUGE drop in my 5k PR from 17:24 to 16:10. Now into this winter, I have my eyes set on a state meet appearance in the 3200. Will be running about 95mpw before track starts in March.
My biggest week in high school was 58 miles. I never sniffed 50 miles until indoor track my senior year. All my high school PRs are from that year (I only raced track my junior and senior years, although I've run XC since elementary school).
400-55 (raced once in two years of indoor and outdoor)
800-2:02
1600-4:36 (raced it 4 times ever)
3200-10:27 (raced it a lot, but always at the end of double or triple)
XC-17:06 3-mile early in the season; 18:01 5k on a brutal course late in the season (16:48 for a road 5k between indoor and outdoor my senior year, though).
As you can tell from my times and notes, I considered myself an 800m runner, and it was the event in which I had my best results. I wonder, though, what I could have done in the 1600 if I had focused on it a little more.
10th grade - started running, up to 40 mpw
11th grade - up to 70 mpw, maybe average of 50
12th grade - up to 95 mpw, maybe average 65-70
400 - 59
800 - 2:06
1600 - 4:27
3200 - 9:29
5k XC - 15:39 (generally just under 16 minutes my senior year, so not really a fluke)
I was definitely an XC specialist at that point. I think I probably overtrained a bit during my senior track season, obsessing a little too much with mileage.

400: no idea
800: no idea
1600: 4:52
3200: 10:05

obviously 5k was my best distance. I had one and one only race gear.
Senior year:
Cross: 30-35/week - 16:18 5K
Track: 30-35/week
400 - 50
800 - 1:54
1600 - 4:21
Triple Jump - 39ft. Did this at a crappy all relay meet we went to that had the 4x800 and DMR only for distance events, the rest were various hurdle and sprint relays.

Always thought the 1600 was my best event but looking back I only ran the 32 3-4 times in my high school career. Compared to 20+ miles.
