Many states have rules regarding school uniforms being worn out of season. In most cases, it's because wearing your school uniform (and thus representing your school) makes it count as a meet, even if it's only one guy. There are limitations to the number of meets a school can run, which probably varies by state, and I'm guessing that if your team exceeds that limit, all results from the season can be voided. Whether or not you think it's a good rule (probably to keep from over-racing kids) or a stupid one doesn't matter. In all likelihood, Footlocker simply wants to avoid the possibility of a state association voiding the results, and at the same time doesn't want to say, "New York can wear school uniforms but Pennsylvania can't, and Central High School in Maryland can because they didn't reach the limit of their meets but East High in Maryland can't." Instead, they have made a blanket rule. In terms of meet management, that's a good idea.
So now we're back to the age-old LR debate about whether stupid rules should be followed. And my position, again, is that if the rule is known up front and it's not difficult to follow, then why not just follow the damn thing?
I don't know the rules here in Illinois in terms of a team, but if there were some number for an individual he would be pretty safe. Since he competed in the world junior triathlon meet in September he didn't run for his team until late Sept./early Oct. so he missed several early season events.
This is an embarrassment to the IL running community. Hopefully, the IL running community will support runners not named Matt Winthrow?
Thank you Ghost of Afh whatever your name was. I don't care about the child running in the uniform but some states and federations have such rules. In my home state a kid ran in his uniform in a Nike event and the coach had to change the scheduling to make sure the kid would not exceed his number of meets. The team is charged with a meet even if only one person runs in a school issued uniform. The boy went without asking the coach and didn't know the rules. The coach didn't mind the young man competing but the boy didn't know the rules.
The funny thing is, all the morons posting on this thread about the rules would, when asked, say that Once a Runner is their favorite running novel, the plot of which revolves around the concept of silly rules and self-important bureaucrats and the need for Quentin to make up an identity just so he can enter a meet at his college. Does that qualify at irony?
That is one of the problems with running in the country, instead of just promoting running as a healthy activity they have all of these ridiculous rules and regulations concocted by a bunch of fat administrative farts.
Who cares that he wore his high school jersey at FLR? I made footlocker back 6 years ago. I think every other guy from my region wore their high school jersey too. I'm not sure why this is a big deal.
Did he wear his school uniform or was it a jersey from Nike Team Nationals from last year?
I just went and viewed the race footage on the Foot Locker Web Site - I was thinking of the wrong guy...
So...if this is indeed a violation, what is the consequences for such a terrible oversight?
The photo from the Regional race shows him in a different uniform from the race photo in the article. It's a Nike uniform, with Sandburg written on it. Maybe he just had it printed. Is Sandburg a town also? Here's the photo:

No. Sandburg is a school in Orland Park.

he finished, and then changed his uniform before finishing
If you get bent out of shape about a uniform, you need to get a f***ing life.
i suppose looking like a fairy isnt a violation?
Our coach sells us our uniforms at the end of the season. So since we own them we can basically wear them anytime we want.

I suppose you guys get your panties in a bunch when members of girls relay teams aren't wearing the same color Jogbras. Please gain some reasonable perspective on what is important in high school athletics, you jealous losers.
You are the loser, and a complete idiot may i add.
No one is debating whether or not it's a good rule, and i'm sure no one thinks it's a good rule, so please stfu and go away. Only thing people on here are talking about, is the fact that he broke the rule, and then basically announced that he broke the rule, which is quite odd.

maybe he doesn't care about no stinkin' Footlocker?
