Charlie Spedding writes that for London 1989 he knew he couldn't run well because of injury. After telling Dave Bedford that he wouldn't start, Bedford gave him 1/4 of the appearance fee.

Very true. The race I work for pays $2500 for the win, $1300 for 2nd, (prize money down to 6th), plus $1000 bonus on the line for a course record (2:17:03). 2:19flat is the #4 all-time performance at this race, in 21 years of being held.

The notes above about what money is available would be accurate for our race. We offer comp entries into the low 2:30's, and travel money and/or lodging for runners with stronger resumes. I don't believe we've ever paid appearance money but then again we really don't go after anyone in the 2:12-2:14 range. We'd rather put together a strong field of runners in the 2:20-2:25 range than have one 2:15 guy and then a big gap. Not that we're only reaching out to the 2:20-2:25 guys, we'd like a strong field of guys in the 2:15-2:20 range but reality is that is a smaller group.

Your race sounds perfect for me. What marathon are you talking about?
