Asheville and Brevard are about a half-hour drive from each other. Both have miles and miles of kick-ass trails, but Brevard has better creeks to soak in. Probably better (safer) road running in Asheville. Job market sucks in both places unless you want to work retail, hotels or restaurants. Tourism rules there.

Stud runners in Brevard/Asheville area (in no particular order):

Randy Ashley - 2 time Olympic marathon trial runner

Joe Gibson - Tiny dude but a fast as hell, 29:06 10k

Bill Baldwin - 2:25 marathoner

Chad Newton - I agree he's a tool, but he's a fast tool. Probably between him and Joe for fastest 5k/10k guy in area.

Thomas Cason - now coaching Brevard College, low 14 5k guy, one of Furman's best ever runners.

Anne Riddle - 3 time ultra marathon national champion, finished 9th in World 100k.

Kim Pawelek - Just moved there with Brantley, getting ready for women's trials in April.

Keith Brantley - Top American finisher in 96 Olympic Marathon.

Norman Blair - not as fast as he used to be, but he finished in the top 10 in Boston in the early 80s. Great personal coach now.

Mark Lundblad - 2:35 marathoner who is becoming a top ultra marathon guy (I guess because he's engaged to Anne Riddle).

Scott Laws - mid-14 5k guy. 2:35 marathoner.

Laura Stanley - top xcountry runner on Duke as a sophomore.

Jeff Campbell - as of next week.

dont forget about the colleges in the area that have pretty good runners. UNCA has a few studs, and Mars Hill just up the road is a top 25 DII team.

I heard from several people there that the trend among many of those runners listed is CHEATING. The older individuals have often cheated on spouses and then gotten together and continued the trend (including the engaged couple listed). Must be something in the mountain water! Be careful if you go not to get drawn into the fold of cheaters.

Don't bunch all of those runners into the same group. There have been a couple affairs, but that's it. I'm sure you could go to any town with a bunch of like minded people and you'll get some of that. It definitely is not an epidemic.

Just reporting what I know, not trying to lump people together. Just not naming names. The count is more like 5, with two repeat offenders...and they are together now! Wonder how that one will end?

since when have they been a top 25 d2 team? they did go to nationals since they got an auto, as well as lenoir-rhyne. if they raced all the top d2 teams in the nation, they would be luck to be in the top 50.

Good runner, good guy, damn good all-around athlete,damn fine coach, but Cason never ran low 14:00. I can only think of maybe twice he broke 15:00, never in college that I know of, but I could be wrong. I think he ran in the 14:30's once at Raleigh post-collegiate, but that was a pretty big PR. He wasn't nearly one of Furman's best runners ever - not slamming him but rather noting that Furman had some really good runners in the 70's - Dave Branch, Lee Fidler, etc. not to mention Brian Caffery (3:44 1500m) and Adam Jagelski (14:07 5k I think) in the 80's. A pretty impressive school record's board for a small southern school.

Laws has never broken 15:00 for 5k that I am aware of but I don't see why he couldn't as his 1500/1600 and 3000/3200 PR's are plenty fast enough. Laws doesn't spend much time in Brevard these days - I might be there as much as he is. We always seem to be in town at the same time.

And, no offense to him, but where did Wild Bill run 2:25?

There are NO stud runners at either UNCA, Brevard College or Mars Hill these days

Chad is the only legit, quality runner in Brevard at the moment. Joe is the only current fast guy in Asheville. The rest have/were fast, but are not at the moment

The rest of what you posted consists largely of even more florid bullshit. I suspect you're one of those ultra-geeks or trail-freaks scampering around Appalachia like Eric Rudolph while grinding an axe at every mismarked turn. Who's Brantley? And mix in a few facts with your stats, whydoncha.

I'm neither an ultra guy nor a trail "freak", although I do about 90 percent of my running on the trails (seems to helps the old knees a bit). As far as having an ax to grind, I guess only with you. And if you don't know who Brantley is you shouldn't even be on this board.

My bad on the info on Laws and Cason. Thomas was running sub-15 as recently as last year and he told me that he ran low-14s before. I guess he likes to tell tales like most of the rest on this board. With Laws, it was a typo. I meant to say low 15. He ran 15:05 this summer on the track.

Bill's marathon PR is 2:32. Again, my bad.

But 1996 was a lifetime ago. Is it relevant now to the discussion that he is an elite runner? No. He made an Olympic team, ran a bunch of road races, got married and divorced twice and along the way impressed many as a guy a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
