Dead cow is extremely healthy. Obviously the protein, zinc, B-12, etc. are great, but SO TOO ARE THE SATURATED AND MONUNSATURATED FATS. The fats in beef tend to IMPROVE your blood lipid profile and are somewhat anabolic.

1 toaster strudel

6 mile run

bowl mac and cheese/pineapple cake

bowl rice and veggies/handful potato chips/bluebery muffin

small chocolate chip cookie

8 mile run

whole jenos deluxe pizza with added tomatoes and cheese

Didn't I read an article on the front page about high fat diets helping sled dogs run farther? Might be something to that.

Point is cutting any type of food out of your diet is a bad idea. Eat a balanced diet with all the food groups if your worried about wieght eat less.

Download some of the software that the CRON people use. It will tell you if you're missing anything.

A couple of questions:

1) You think it's healthy to drop that much weight in 2 weeks? You take that as a sign of success? Why?

2) You're happy and feel healthy being 6'3 and 144 pounds? Heck, even 155?

3) You enjoy eating a diet like that? You don't think you would be happier if you ate a more varied diet?

Over a gallon of smoothies a day, holy crap. How much do you spend on groceries in a typical week or month? All those fruits and veggies add up quick, especially when you eat them by the gallon.

Not to mention 2-4 energy bars a day. that sh!t ain't cheap

Yeah... I don't think it was the vegan diet that led Carl to his best year ever on the track. I'm sure it was something he was taking, yes, but it wasn't the broccoli.

Just read an article today about Kenyan runners and their high-carb, low-fat diets.I don't think there is really an answer except that the less processed a food is, the better.

Listen to Alan on this subject. For health reasons (per my doctor), I'm shooting for a 50%+ "raw" diet consisting heavily of vegetables, nuts and seeds, eggs (or egg whites), lean meats (I try to avoid red meat but eat my share of buffalo, which is the only mammal that doesn't get cancer BTW) like chicken, turkey, ostrich, etc, non-gluten grains and a very moderate amount of low glycemic DARK fruit with skin and seeds intact. Occasional dark chocolate with its bioflavanoids. I don't eat cow dairy, but do eat goat (both cheese and kefir).

I am not trying to lose weight (I'm thin enough), but I've lost probably 14 pounds on this "diet." Curiously, I've been told before that the reason I'm losing weight isn't because of eliminating calories (I eat as much as I feel like), but because I am eliminating food allergies (pollution = dilution) and eating more raw. Raw unprocessed food has all of the enzymes, fiber, seeds, bioflavanoids, etc that all work together synergistically for effect. It is the sugary, processed diets that we as Americans have become accustomed to that have precipitated our health crisis.

So you are cutting out animal protein and refined sugar. If you get rid of dairy and processed starches you will have increased energy. And all the comments about protein are crazy. You don't need that much and the protein you get shouldn't be coming from dead animals. And you should think about making your own dressing for salads there is no telling what they put in the stuff you buy at the store. Your multi vitamin is a waste of money, get you vitamins from diet not in pill form. Good luck in the 8K, it's not all about weight.

I've been a vegetarian for years, so no meat (not even fish). I don't eat much in the way of sweets, either. It works for me.

Don't listen to all the idiots who scream you can't run well as a vegetarian and you'll lack B+. Your body will tell you if it's possible or not. Works for some and not others, we are all an experiment of 1.

Wow, you will be a one year wonder just like the anorexic women who used to make the cover of Runner's World after one good marathon, and then disappear forever. Unless you have a very small frame for your height, the physics of running will let you know what your anorexic weight relative to height has done to you without fail in a year or towo. You will spend several years attempting to reclaim your prior times after "the injury" whether mental or physical or relational, only to discover that no one cares what your best times were unless you were on an Olympic team or had a world record. Maybe all that pride in your light weight would be better spent focusing on a great career that would help the world, or at least your own financial future. Too compulsive for a marriage that lasts (without giving 144 up) too busy to raise well fathered kids, and too into yourself and your accomplishment of light weight to contribute much to the world.

The next person who spouts off about Kenyans eating 70% of their diet from carbs must immediately go run a 2:10 marathon.

A 50-70 mile a week letsrunner is not a Kenyan.

I eat a high protein (40%+), moderate fat (30%+), and low carb (-20%) diet most days of the week. I lift weights 60 minutes a day plus will put in around 100 miles a week on the bike. My energy level is fantastic and I've been setting PRs in my workouts even when some days are no more than 50g of carbs. I eat vegetables with every meal that I don't count in my totals (leafy green veggies, tomatoes, carrots, etc). I recently had some labs done:

Blood Pressure: 90/60

Resting Heart Rate: 50

Total Cholesterol: 203

Triglycerides: 43 (under 150 is optimal)

HDL: 79 (over 40 is optimal)

LDL: 115 (under 100 is optimal)

LDL/HDL Ratio: 1.45 (under 3.2 is optimal)

For those who actually understand cholesterol you know that magic number of 200 really doesn't mean much. Simply having cholesterol is less importhant than what it is actually doing....such as creating cortisol and testosterone in my case. The problem with cholesterol is when it ain't doing anthing. As you can see my HDL is almost TWICE the goal of at least 40 (higher here is better) and my ratio is more than half better than the 3.2 goal.
