The first one off the top of my head: St. George marathon. Nothing special about the race what-so-ever EXCEPT it is such an elevation drop that it draws from all over the US with people trying to pad their time or qualify for the trials. Obviously vastly inferior to Chicago, NY, Boston, etc. etc., but there sure seem to be an inordinate amount of people from out of state crashing the gates. Vegas, Austin, Tucson, and it gets worse when the distance goes down to halfs and 10K's. Why do you think directors develop such courses? They know the nature of their client and know that courses with unfair advantages, when compared to flat courses or the track, will draw many, many people that a normal course would not. I have nothing against anyone who chooses to run these courses, but don't pretend the efforts/times are equal. They are not!
