Tons of young female athletes, particularly distance runners, don't get their periods for a while because of the intense training. I'm sure malnutrition (don't know what Caster's neighborhood was like, so this is just speculation and could be applicable and could not) could make a lack-of-period a common enough thing for her area that she didn't think much of it.

It was her choice to run as a hermie, and she reaps the consequences of this revelation. Why doesn't she just have her nuts removed if her intention is anything other than to cheat?

because she does NOT have FUNCTIONAL testes and probably does not have a cervix/ovaries/womb so she's unable to produce eggs.

5) The fact that she may have undescended/latent testes is indeed a precarious situation because there is a relatively high chance of them becoming cancerous.

It's looking more and more likely that Caster Semenya has AIS (Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome) and the IAAF DOES allow FEMALES with this condition to run!

I think another important thing to remember is that this young lady is 18 years old! The people who are demonizing her betray their own insensitivity to a very delicate situation.....

Caster grew up in a small village without running water and electricity she was not malnourished however.

I'm just speculating here but when Caster did not "get" her period she probably figured that she was infertile (that's what her family members seem to indicate). Having AIS or any "other" condition would never have crossed her mind at all (she probably doesn't even know what AIS is!)

With all the bullshit going around about it competing and SA being upset, Personally Im happy for Caster, now it can have her testes removed and won't be at such a high risk for cancer and death.Sure its a horribly sad situation, the leaking of the medical results was not right. What do you suggest the IAAF suppose to do? Let it run against the women?

What about this issue of Caster being a hermaphrodite have folks suddenly clinging onto being politically correct and holding onto words like "respect" and "confidential". And to be honest, I'm among the many here who really think someone, somewhere in SA new Caster was a man and have begun to see the entire story as comical and ridiculous. I'm aware of how respect and confidentiality work in the real world, but I believe ASA and Caster parents are the ones to really blame, not anonymous posters on a website message board. They were in denial during his/her childhood and even with modern medical techniques and medical results they continue to be in denial. all kinds of decent high school boys 800m runners could go clean up at the world champs if racing the women. we don't allow that, so we can't allow someone who has some trace of female sex organs to do it either.

if (s)he were good enough to run with the men, then there would be no problem at all.

finally, there is no reason to be cruel to this person. but there is also no reason to allow this person to steal medals from real women.

I thought the testes were working enough to make her levels of testosterone 3x higher than what is normal for a woman. If she has no ovaries, where is her estrogen coming from?? Maybe that is why she is so manly, no estrogen to give her any female characterics. Women who have ovaries removed take estrogen replacement therapy. If she has her testes removed and then takes estrogen will she be allowed to compete as a woman? Mutola must of had some of each as her voice was that of a boy going into puberty. I'm a female middle distance runner who has competed at the elite level in past years, I can honestly say that if I were beaten out of a gold medal by a hermphroditic woman, I would call it fair enough. She did nothing wrong, sure she has what some would call an "unfair" an advantage. But I'd say PED's are way more of an unfair advantage, an intentional one at that, and this is a totally different deal. Anyone could (and will) argue that all day. But when it comes down to it, she's still a great athlete who is stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to competing; can't compete with men as her times would not hold up, but if she competes with (and beats) the women, then just like this she gets paraded around like some kind of freak. What the hell is she supposed to do??! The whole situation totally disgusts me.
