Okay, so some random standard based on a distance approximating a yard is useful, but not the measure it approximates? It is not the basic standard (the foot or yard or furlong) that is the problem for calculations but rather the difficulty comes in from the relation between the different units. It really has no bearing on this discussion, which is about meters, not yards, anyway.

QUICKNESS, the ability to accelerate and change directions, not speed. Tennis players never run at top speed because the court is too small. Top sprinters need 50-60 meters to reach top speed. Tennis players need to be really quick for 10-20 meters.

I was speaking for to his ability to stay so for and heathy for so long, tennis is very demanding sport on the joints and body. He's been doing it at the highest level for 20+ years
Federer looks like an 800m runner and nothing else. I doubt he'd be very good though.

Federer is my favorite player, and he might be able to break 60 in the 400m (I'd imagine when he was younger he certainly could have), but Murray looks like a beast of an athlete. His legs look very strong, and he obviously works on his speed a lot so him running 52 wouldn't surprise me at all. If trained, I would take Federer in a 5k though, he could probably get down to 17-18 minutes after a few months.

In the article it was mentioned that Federer could reach a top speed of 20 mph.

Well this is form the horses mouth but I still doubt it.People who just do a bit of running tend to forget their times but somehow always run faster than they actually did. Notice the 'about' 52 seconds. In another article the guy who was coaching him for running sessions said he thought he was was capable of 53 - not actually done it

The commentator in the video says that the winner's time is 11.5. Rod Laver is quite a bit behind, probably running 13+ for 100 yards.
I play tennis and my instructor has been a pro player until a few years ago. He runs regularly to keep fit. He is quick on the court, but can't run very fast (like 65-70 for 400m). In general, being a good runner is probably irrelevant to being a good tennis player. After a tough workout, when I can barely run, I don't have particular issues with playing a game of tennis. Apparently the muscles or movement involved are different enough.

At the highest level, you need to be a good runner.

This, plus if he worked on form and keeping his head down instead of looking ahead while in the blocks, or if he wore shorts that were athletic vs country club attire...he definitely could have shaved a second or two off..;) but I do think the competitiveness of being a tennis player and running on pure guts certainly helped him. I'm impressed.
Btw, I think Federer has the ideal physique for a tennis player, lean & athletic, definitely pass off as a healthy distance runner. 🎾🎾
