watch the race on flotrack. he did lose momentum right when he started his kick. no he was not going to go sub 13, but he could have won if he had positioned himself better.

Yeah the race is pretty much over at that point. Bekele is going with at least 5 laps to go, and making sure the pace is reasonably fast before that. Teg always runs the same way, holds back in the field, and tries to eck out a "win" in the last 180 meters or home stretch or whatever. Really the race has long been decided by then.

Maybe he's hopeful the pace will be slow at Berlin, that everyone else will die and he can kick past them at the end but good luck.

What makes you think that the race has necessarily been won with 180 meters to go? Plenty of people rely on their finishing speed over the last 200 to win races. Especially if you think you're outmatched aerobically. You seriously expect Teg to run away from the field with 2000 meters to go like Bekele can do?

Lot of the races this season Bekele hasn't gone until about 200. I do think that Teg should have gone at 300, he just looked to good.

I know one thing, if Rupp was in that race he would have gone at 500 and it would have been fun to watch even if he got eaten up.

Bekele didn't run away from the field with 2000 meters to go at Beijing. He only ran away from Kipchoge the last 300 meters.

Spoken like a couple of road racers without any speed (finishing or otherwise).

You guys seem to have watched a different race than I did. What I saw was Teg running almost a perfect kickers race. He ran at the back of the lead pack the whole way until the bell--and when some of the world's best took off aerobically Teg went right with them.

I don't know anything of what workouts Jerry has been running, but what I saw as a coach was when the lead guy took off in the last lap, Teg had a second or two delay before responding and this is what cost him the win--but he probably wasn't there for the win, just the A, and hanging back, staying out of trouble, and getting the A he did perfectly. The thing to do, though, may be pace change training, but it might simply be more high-level race experience: Teg simply doesn't see people in the US with that (his level) speed in a 5000, and if he was racing Rupp it would have been no contest.

If Tegenkamp got 2nd by less than a second, I would imagine he was going for the win. I wish I could've seen the race though. This was a good race for Tegenkamp. He's still about a month away from worlds when he'll have to start racing, so he'll probably round into pretty nice form. If he could run a 53.5 off 13:30 pace in late june, I imagine he'll only be quicker off similar pace in mid august.

So he is not running anymore races until worlds? Does anyone know about what Schuamcher's plans are for his athletes if he has any for them before worlds?

There's London GP next weekend and there's Stockholm. A lot of sprinters/hurdlers will be doing both. But if you run 1500/5000 on 7/31, being able to peak well for WC is probably doubtful. So if Teg doesn't run in London, I doubt he will race at all before Berlin.

At this point, he just established himself as a "contender" and I don't know what more he has to prove. Jerry seem to be doing a phenomenal job and I'm sure he'll do the right thing with Teg. I just hope he starts that kick with 181 meters to go in Berlin (I wish he'd sit on Lagat).

Seriously? I'm assuming you are arguing that Teg would run away? He went 62 and 59 for his last two laps off of 13:12-13:15 pace. Their last 1K was 2:33. He ran a great race but that is certainly not out of Rupps world. If I remember correctly Rupp closed in 55 or 56 on the boards for 13:18.

Teg has run 3:34. Geb, KennyB and Kipchoge (and Baumann) have run 3:31i-3:33. Rupp has run 3:39. As much as the Eugene folks want to think differently, it's a different world. And that's why in Berlin, Teg will be racing for a medal....and Rupp will be more like a top-10 contender. There's been all kinds of bs (typical Eugene crap going back 40 years) going around, but Rupp has never DONE anything to suggest the same potential Teg has right now.

Seriously? 1:49? 13:18 on the boards closing in 27? His 3:39 was at the back end of a triple and he closed in :55. Did you see what happened to ulrey when he got in a fast european rabbit race with nothing else on his plate (just like Tegs PR)? If you think Rupp can't run a WHOLE lot faster than a 3:39 in a race that doesn't round up a triple and go at 3:43 pace through 1100 you really need to slow down and think with an open mind. The guy closed his 5K (triple again) in 2:25 last 1K jogging in and waving for crissake! I don't think anyone who saw his last 150 could doubt he would have hit 2:23 had he run hard to the line. Do you know what pace that is? (3:34).

I wouldn't say Rupp could beat Teg hands down in a fast 5K, but I also wouldn't say the opposite.

With Rupp, it is hard to say because he has never come through the 3k (on his way to a 5k) in 7:54 like Teg just did Saturday. Teg finished in 5:13+ for his last 2k (about a 4:10 mile pace) I believe that Rupp is capable of being a 13:10-12 guy right now, but he just finished 3 seasons of college running and could be "out of gas". We will see how he handles the World Championships in Berlin.
