65 62
on a double: 60 55 for a 1:55.8
My district final (800m) in the 12th grade:
The field was weak that year (I had the fast PR by about 10 seconds) ... and I had a reputation for leading races through really fast splits - needless to say, no one else in the race was planning on leading. I was trying to save up energy for the 4x400, which was 20 minutes later, and opted to sit back for the first lap. No one knew what to do - everyone was looking around - it was quite comical to watch from behind.
We came through in 70. I moved passed the field at the bell, and ran 26 for the next 200 before shutting it down with 150 to go. Final time - 2:08
Splits 70 - 58 ... 34, 36, 26, 32 (jogging the last 100)
While not a terribly extreme negative split, I particularly remember this one race as I was the only non-D1 runner in the heat of 14. Indoor 3000, started clicking off 35 second 200's, and just slowly dropped it from there. Went through the 1600 in 4:39, then went to 34's then 33's with a really hard last lap to run 8:37 for 4th. Our school record was 8:45, which had been my goal, so I was quite happy and realized how much a difference being in the right race makes as most of my PR's had come from races I'd beeen leading myself.
Nothin' spectacular, but given that I've only negative split, like, twice ever since I started racing seriously 5 years ago:
4 miles in 22:13 (5:33 pace)
last mile in 5:15 - probably split that 2:45; 2:30, but I don't know for sure as it was on the roads...
for a 5 mile time of 27:28
Nothing that sweet but 2:20 - 2:06
One time in 9th grade I split 5:25/5:19 for a 3200 which got me an 11-second PB and 2nd place at the JV conference final. I felt like I ran it perfectly. Now I'm training to race a marathon at that pace, but I still look back on that race as a big highlight in my career.
L.A. Marathon 2002
8 minutes.

The "worst you've ever tanked" thread got me thinking. Tanking is another word for very bad positive splits, which tend to be a result of overambitious (read: suicidal) pacing.
So what about your most remarkable negative splits? Theoretically they should be easy: just jog the first mile of a 5K, then race. Has anybody ever deliberately done that?
I only have one good negative split story: 1:41/1:25 in my first marathon. I'd run a 1:20:38 half marathon one month earlier, so I was in shape, but I had a cold on race day. I almost DNS, then decided not to let all my training go to waste. So I went out easy and ran as I felt. By the 10-mile point I felt surprisingly good. So I decided to make a decisive break when I hit the halfway point and notch 6:30s for the rest of the race, if I was able to.
Strange feeling, at 13.1, to say, "Bye bye" and pick up your pace by a minute a mile. Great way to debut a marathon, in some ways. The wall wasn't remotely an issue.
I found this thread because I am training for the marathon and want to see if the mileage I'm doing will allow me to do so. Ran 1:40/1:44 for my first marathon two years ago, so a slight positive split, but not horrible. No bonking or wall either.
I did neg split my steady 20 on Saturday (1:23/1:19) and felt strong throughout, albeit a slight soreness at Mile 19 but no cramping. I also went out slow for the first 8 miles (1:07) because of a sore back and I ran it on 5 hours of sleep. But still, 2:43 was a good steady effort for 20 and I could have done a little more.
Interestingly, there's a two-mile race coming up in Worthington I'm doing to test my speed and I'm hoping to run 13 flat or better (6:35/6:24) on the flat course at TWHS that day (8/12). It's not a marathon workout but more just to see where I'm at. Best part of it is that it's free!

I realized neg splits or even splits were a thing in XC. Has it been 20 years ago already? (Fall 2001):
I'd go out too fast and run 5:36/12:10 and finish somewhere in the low 19s.
When I broke 19 I decided to go out slower and run 5:58/12:00 and then I was able to break 19 without a problem.
I did negative split in 2002 for an 11:30 2-mile at the end of track season, April 2002. I wasn't fast. But went out in 5:54 and came home in a more respectable 5:36 to close it out.
HS senior year:
16:53 5k PR with a 5:29 1st mile, then 2.5 weeks later I ran a 16:58 5k with a 5:37 1st mile due to a massive hill 200m into the race that you practically had to walk up.
2 years later:
1:22:09 half marathon win and PR. The race had 1st and 2nd half Splits. My 2nd half was 2 minutes faster even though I was solo the last 9.6 miles. It was my hometown race too so it was really special to me.
Years later:
36:32 10k PR with an 18:23 1st 5k and 18:09 2nd 5k. I entered the race with a 37:29 PR so I was ecstatic afterwards.
