Fernandez Declares for 1500 and 5000

anybody else notice this? Top 4 entries into the jr 5000m race

If he could get the 1500m and 5000m junior records at 18, that would be pretty nice. Forget about the mile. The mile junior record is 3:51.1, isn't it? And the 800m (880y?) junior record must be about 1:44.3, so it's no accident that Ryun's junior records have lasted this long. Weren't two of them world records? I would love to see German go after both the 1500 and 5000m records and both are manageable at this meet. If he can qualify for the finals with minimal effort, he could do it. Otherwise, send the boy off to Europe for a couple meets right after USATF.

Rupp would not win the 5k over Teg and Solinsky if he ran it. No way Jose.

Yeah, it's highly doubtful. Solinsky already ran the same mark for 5K as Rupp peaked for indoors, and solinsky did it at a podunk little meet called Mt. Sac in terrible conditions. Plus Rupp doesn't have the closing speed to race with these guys! ;-)

First off, you don't run a championship race (even senior one) to set any record. Even a junior one.

Secondly, I give Fernandez a very real shot at 3rd place in the 5K. Lagat's out of reach. Teg & Solinsky are clearly favored over him. But one bad race by any and he can step right in. Plus... given Fernandez' amazing races thus far...

What has Teg done lately?

I think Rupp could take both Teg and Solinsky if he runs smart.

Teg ran a 7:36 or so 3k at Prefontaine. I think he edged Solinsky. And was only a second or two back from Lagat.

Just my vote, and I know it doesn't mean squat.

I personally feel that Rupp would own Teg and Solinsky in any 5k style race, rabbited or a sit and kick.

I also feel that Fernandez has no chance at the 5k. You all dwell on his 1,500 performances.... but he got his ass handed to him in the last lap of the Stanford 5k in the "B" race. Also, he's yet to proven his ability to run anything but races where he leads the entire way (much like a time trial), how is he going to adjust to racing in the middle of the pack getting pushed around? My vote? Choke like he did at NCAA XC. The dude is too green in regards to "racing" rather than time trialing which is where he shines.

But like I said... the races will prove who had a better hunch. I can't wait to see it.

Also in the field is Trevor Dunbar... I think we might just see a pretty decent high school time pop on by with guys like Colby Lowe leading the way.

Though it's quite doubtful anyone at all will be dropping sub 14:00, unless someone rabbits a fast mile...

Still, I think Dunbar should finish 2nd or 3rd with a sub 14:15 time. My exact guest would be 14:06, unless it gets tactical. His 8:49 2-mile win impressed me in that he won by 4-5 seconds, as well as weather being rather meh.

gotta love that time trial he just did at NCAA's!! or that time trail he did to make the JR World Cross team or any of the time trails he did this winter in the mile and 3000, whose to say that Stanford wasn't just a time trial as well....ooops, my bad, it can't be considered a time trial since he lost that one and got his ass handed to him in the last lap....but we wouldn't want to dwell on that since it was like his 1st outdoor race of the season...if his time trials are wrong, then he don't want to be right...

It is amazing how cavalierly people throw around words like "choke". I don't think that it is new info that Fernandez got hurt at NCAA XC.

At any rate I agree with you that it will be cool to see how he and everyone else does this weekend.

He lead from start to finish on all those races. The 5k at stanford he didn't. So I consider a race where he leads from start to finish and doesn't have to jockey for position to be a "time trial". Seeing that he lead from start to finish (very impressive, or very weak effort by his competition) during NCAA 1500 then yeah, in a way it was a time trial. No jockeying!I didn't say it's not working for him, I'm just skeptical about what will happen when he's pushed, forced to run in a pack, boxed in, etc. I haven't seem him race that style of race before so I'm assuming he's inexperienced with it. And it will be interesting to see how he responds.

Seriously??? He stated he "severed his achilis (sp) tendon" during the race, then was practicing two weeks later. Obviously he was not injured during the race and simply exhagurated his excuse. His or coach Smith's statement regarding his injury would have ended ANYONE'S career, but he's back training in full 14 days later.... hmmmmm Does he just recover that fast? Is he Superman? No, he choked and found a way to save face.

Due to that performance I'm currious to see how he performes this weekend. Not saying he won't run fast, I'm just not betting he'll beat everyone and perform how his fans think he will. I believe he'll run a medeocre time for him. Impressive? Yes, but I simply don't believe he'll be able to take it to the next level this weekend.

I think Michael Coe would argue that German didn't lead wire to wire in his 3k victory...oh yeah, the flotrack video might argue that point as well.

And might it not occur to anybody that armchaired and planned out German and coach Smith's races that he executed that 1500 just like you guys said he had to... even though his main percieved threat(Centrowitz) was not in the race, he executed the same plan like Centrowitz was there and he won....I would have like to have seen a healthy Centrowitz in the final, but I don't think the result would have changed, German would have found a way to win, just like with Coe in that indoor 3000, just my opinion though...

One person running side by side or just ahead of you is not the same as having Teg, Solinsky, Rupp, etc. all boxing you in, pushing you around, clipping your heals, etc.

We all get to think what we want. You? You get to think he's an experienced racer in packs and boxed in situations. You probably also think he'll win going away this weekend in 13:15 or somthing.

Me? I think he's green at racing from the middle of the pack and am interested in seeing how he responds. I think he'll take 5 to 9th in 13:40 or somthing.

That's what's neat. We get to see what happens.
