In all honesty, Fernandez is way more marketable than the pimple faced kid. Both studdly runners, no question about that. Looks? Well, Rupp lacks that greatly. It's a shallow world, but hey, that's how it works. Plus, there's no arguemnt on Fernandez's running potential, obviously, much higher than Rupp's.
You lost a lot of credit with the above. There is no guarantee of "potential". Rupp ran a 4:01 mile as a high schooler, German ran a 4:00 1600. About the same. Rupp ran 28:15 as a freshman in college, mostly alone. German ran 3:55 indoors, all alone. These guys are both great. But all runners are going to have years when they don't seem to progress due to injury, illness or just because. It has happened to every single runner. It happened to Rupp. What Rupp has proved is that he didn't get stuck.
Many do, many will. We can all list guys who came out of high school, showed excellent promise and then plateaued or even faded. We all want German not to, but only time will prove that.
Now responding to Rupps last 1600. Some people have mentioned that because the pace wasn't blistering leading up that it was like a fresh 1600???? That is completely asenine. He ran a hot and humid 10K the night before near 28:20. He closed that out with a 2:56 1200 that was really a 2:54 1200 until he jogged the last 20 meters. And despite not leading, he was involved in a fartlek 28:20, it's not like it was a tempo.
Coming into that last 1600 Rupp had run 18400 meters around 14:10 average pace. In the 5K final alone he had to deal with a shoe coming off, catching up to the pack and all the jostling that goes on in a tight pack. And lastly, and I can't believe nobody has mentioned this, the mental energy that he had to measure out and expend in dealing with the pressure of getting 20 points for a team!!! Imagine winning the 10K the night before and thinking, well that was 2 races in the last 21 hours but I have to win a 5K tomorrow with 5 guys who will be anticipating my kick and trying to take me down.
Lastly, break that 1600 down. He started with 2:05.X and closes in 1:54.X WHILE JOGGING IN! How fast does he go if he actually starts running hard at 1600 and doesn't slow down until he hits the line? It is pretty hard to think he doesn't pick up 3 seconds on the first 800 and a couple by not jogging in. It looked like was going to hit 3:57-3:58 just by running thru the line even without running fast on the front end.
I guess I'd have to agree that I find it impressive that a runner can finish of 20000 of racing in 45 hours and close the last 1600 in an effort that was even comparable to the winning time of the single event 1500 and certainly better than half the 1500 field.
