Does Greer have a shot at the national high school record?

my apologies for the repeated posting.

i did mention, didn't I, that I'm typically an idiot.

I was lucky enough to see Granville's race at the CA State Meet as well.

As stated, Granville did it in the trials. While I had no one in the race I split my watch as Granville went thru 200m. I don't recall the exact split, but suffice to say that it was monstrously fast, particularly in light of it being a prelim.

I began to yell to anyone around me - on the backside, near the 200m start - that Granville was running fast, REALLY fast. He went through 400m equally impressively and, still, few people seemed to understand what was happening. By 600m it was clear that he wasn't about to let up - and he might get the record. It was about then that the race announcer and the crowd seemed to pick up on the fact that the National Record was in jeopardy.

Of course, he got the record, but the majority of the crowd had little idea that it was happening; given that I'm typically an idiot, it was sheer luck that I caught on early - but it's one of my great memories of track and field.

Interestingly, he narrowly won the final the next day in 1:50 point.

I think that he can break the current record. Unfortunately, he will do that in second place behind Robby Andrews.

He definately will come in second. Robby ran 1:48 in an all HS race to win the State meet. With more competition I think Robby can get the record.

Andrews won't beat Greer to the record, or beat him at 800m this season. My prediction, Greer gets the HSR for 800m at Pre, while Andrews will break four for the mile next weekend in Portland.

He ran 1:50 in the final because that is all he had to do to win. He went 1:46 in the trials because the conditions were good and he did not know if the conditions would be the same the next day.

Granville was the best HS 800m runner ever. Even if Greer breaks the record. The guy has more sub 1:50's in HS races than any other HS kid by a long shot. The competition didn't really matter and he didn't need a professional field to run fast. There is no other HS athlete that held the HS record for Freshman, Soph, junior and senior in any event. He held all 4 for 13 plus years until last year when Greer took the junior record.

I hope Greer gets the record but it is not really the same as what Granville did to get his records.

Answer: not today

I guess not. Probably get back down to 1:47 this year. He is just a kid, running 1:47 is one heck of an accoplishment.
