The problem comes when you read threads and realize people neglect other parts of their lives for a pursuit of excellence they'll never reach. Because they shoulda picked up bowling instead :)

Yawn. Don't worry so much about how other people spend their time. How the hell is that a "problem" for you?
There's only so many hours in a day, days in a year, years in a life. People have thousands of things they could spend their time on. They're never going to get to most of them, and they're going to give minimal attention to all but a few of their pursuits at any given time. *Everyone* neglects parts of their lives and potential pursuits. You pays your money and takes your choice.

The ACTN3 gene is linked with your muscles' variance in type I or II or IIa or b fiber types..
AMPD1 is an enzyme in skeletal muscle where if you have a very common mutation on your gene that codes for this- you fatigue faster and get cramps..
There's many others to list. Of course performance is almost completely held to your genetic ability. Things like the size of your heart and related tests like VO2max definitely put a ceiling on your performance.
But.. most people have the capability of being very good at something. Obviously too many on Letsrun should spend less time on here, and more time looking for something they're actually good at.
Dude, did you ever think that it is about being YOUR best, and not necessarily THE best.
I have much more respect for the guy that never gets past the 4:30 mile in his life, but trains damn hard to get there just because he wants to be at HIS best. The Guy who may do that 4:03 but just doesn't work hard enough to get that 3:XX down may be beating him every time, but the guy with the 4:30 can honestly say: I was at the top of my game at some point, while you never were...
just a thought... why else should most pros keep running...? the majority never makes it to world fame!
I'm positive that the stats are some where close to what the OP stated. It's a tough thing when you really start to look at your running and realize how terrible you are and how far down on the scale you really rank.
In college (pre-internet days) I'd get T&F News and review the results and such and at some point it was like reading results of aliens running these events. I think it was when guys started to regularly run under 13:00 for the 5k that the light went on in my head and I really had to sit there and just contemplate how badly I suck(ed).
Having said all that I still like to run and see what I can do.
I think we're very arrogant to even attempt to put a figure on it. The human body is a very complex piece of kit that we aren't anywhere near understanding.
Anyone got one PR or performance or season that stands alone from anything else you ever did? Try to explain that one using science. What was different that day? Why couldn't/haven't you done it again? Its all just pissing in the wind. The best attitude for most to take is to learn from your own experience what feels good for you, do as much of this as you can, get to races fresh and then trust to luck that its going to be your day. That what i did a couple of years ago and it worked a treat - the challenge is finding that state of mind all over again.

I dont understand why people continue to train for years running 60+ miles a week when they just dont have the talent to run quick times.
Sure there's the social aspect but why train so hard?
They could just be a fun runner and save themselves from the punishing training!
Personally I wouldn't waste my time.
The majority of people just do not have the natural talent to run fast. unlucky
What you miss is that you have to train hard just to be slow.
If I just start doing nice easy peacefull runs soon I can't even jog.
Just to stay fit and mobile I have to train, watch my diet, do interval and long runs.
"90% of running is natural ability"
the other 90% is HARD WORK

And what would they be pursuing in those other parts?

Wat? I highly doubt that. Diet, yes. But most people can stay fit running easy everyday. Unless you mean racing fit.
