What surprise attacks? Have you not been reading this thread? NK is NOT THAT STUPID. Kim Jong Il will not do anything that could result in his private kingdom being blown to bits. Also, here's a little news flash for you: we've been building nukes since the 40's, we sold chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein during the Cold War, and we sold guns and RPGs to the Taliban during the same time period. Bad foreign policy is far worse than North Korean nukes.

As for that second line, what the hell were you trying to say? Couldn't you at least TRY to form complete and comprehensible sentences?!

The United States does not have the resources to investigate every rogue nuclear state and they've been very busy getting rid of all the nuclear weapons in Iraq.

The US is not perfect by any stretch either, and if some warlords from Mexico started shooting rockets into San Diego, I would expect the US military to flatten the entire area they were coming from immediately if not sooner.

(1) True, but there's no way we can prevent that. NK will not attack anyone right now unless Kim Jong Il gets too greedy for his own good. Sure, he'll sell things to someone, but it's the "someone" we should really worry about, because now that NK has nukes we can't stop them from selling the things.

(2) I agree. I prefer diplomacy over violence whenever possible, but diplomacy stops working when people realize you aren't going to follow through on your promises or threats.

(3) Europe has been afraid of war, and for good reason, ever since two world wars ravaged a large portion of the continent. I don't disagree with the reasons, but the extent of pacifism is certainly weakening Europe's influence over rogue nations. The West needs to grow a pair, but we also need to avoid pissing too many people off. It's a fine balance, and we are nowhere near achieving it.

Honestly if your land was stolen, your children raped, and you are incarcerated in death camps awaiting execution, you will fight back as the Palestinians are fighting the Zionist Occupiers in Palestine. Here is the bottom line. North Korea is very weak. There only way to gain any political leverage is to appear "rogue" or unstable and with a bomb in the works. In reality, they simply do not have the technology to create a nuclear weapon, let alone the legitimate launching mechanisms. As other posters have accurately pointed out, even "if" they did create a bomb, they are not stupid enough to do anything with it. They know that the United States has thousands and thousands of nukes, Japan could put one together within 6 months (WW2 memories make nukes politically taboo in that country, but if push turned to shove, they could get in quickly; they got the technology).

So, Bush, Obama, or any president with a brain will not take North Korea particularly seriously; its unlikely they will get a real bomb and they're not stupid enough to use it. Because the U.S. can't simply do nothing or at least express disapproval, it'll throw out some empty rhetoric, maybe throw another economic sanction at them or something, and thats it.

Iran, by the way, is a bit different. Because Iran is Shi'ite and the majority of of the Mid-east is Sunni, Iran getting a bomb IS a serious threat to the U.S. Here's why: if they get a bomb, every Sunni country will be forced to get one. Then the whole Middle East has a bomb, and we don't have as much muscle over them; if we lose our muscle over the Mid-East and we still depend on them for oil, then we're screwed.

North Korea is not weak, military. Economically, morally, yes. Militarily no. It would take years to fully control that region, and massive losses.

They also just proved they are not afraid to use nuclear weapons on other countries with their recent test.

No, North Korea is weak militarily when compared to the U.S. (and they would never be dumb enough to pick a legitimate fight against China, Japan, etc.). They have but a very small fraction of the number of long-range missles and weapons capable of mass destruction compared to the U.S.

As I alluded to before, it is extremely doubtful any country would "use" (as opposed to merely attain) any weapons when the big guns of the U.S. and Russia. When a country does attain the technology (and I stress how difficult it is to create a nuke and to get any legit launching capability), the only thing that happens is it throws off the balance of power. If the wrong country gets it (such as Iran) and the balance of power is thrown off in the wrong way, then the U.S. security interests are threatened.

The bush Government blew the chance to reign in North korea when their Nuk\'s program was still in infancy.The also blew the opportunity to sort them out in 07/08 when they had agreed to come to the negotiating table.

Right now there are very few options that are viable in sorting out this mess.The only real option is by somehow persuading China to impose saction on North Korea.The other few remaining options are less effective and infact could backfire.

this thread is retarded. at least we can be thankful that none of the morons on letsrun have their fingers on the button. north korea is a pain in the ass, and kim jong il is a crazy son of a bitch, that's for sure. but they are hardly enough of a threat to justify whatever sort of preemptive nuclear strike you armchair commanders-in-chief seem to advocate. the fact is, they are a small nation with very limited nuclear capacity. even if they acquire several working bombs, they lack the long-range delivery systems to be a direct threat to the U.S.; f***ing with china would be very stupid, and f***ing with south korea or japan would also bring swift reprisals from the U.S. we wouldn't even need to take our nukes off standby - we have more than enough conventional firepower to destroy their nuclear capacity and infrastructure in a matter of hours. even if they do develop a long range missle capable of striking the U.S. such a move would be instant suicide for the entire nation. things might get ugly but the likelihood of actual nuclear weapons being used is pretty close to zero, because as crazy as kim jong is, he has to know that china or america could easily crush his tiny country like a bug.

NK is very weak militarily. They have no domestic oil, very little fuel for their armored divisions. Their army is 1950s-1960s era tops, mostly conscripts. Their nuke program is about equivalent to 1949 USA. They have to roll their missile out onto the launch pad to fuel it, which takes hours. It could be taken out very easily.

A co-ordinated attack featuring south korean troops and 50-60,000 USA troops from the south, with a Russian invasion from the north would take NK down in a matter of days.

The problem is, and always has been, China. They prop up the regime. They stand in the way of any military solution. They are the real problem.
