Lots of young runners go sub 5 at 12 or 13. Means nothing to run fast early- some kids are more mature early
When I was attending and running at Occidental College ('80-'84) I had a team-mate by the name of Rick Satterly. In either an all-comers meet, or a JO meet of some kind he ran a 4:38.?? mile in 8th grade. Certainly not bad, but in that race he was beaten by one Thom Hunt at either 4:30 or ;32. Hunt went on to illustrious things including about 8:45 hs 2M, sub 4, sub 28 about an 8:20 steeple and at one time the AR for the 1/2 MAR. set at the long gone Coronado 1/2 mar.
I was 31 when I ran 4:50
here...4:51 in 8th grade...4:16 senior year
3:59 at 23...decent progress...anyone else?
Jorge Torres ran in the high 4:20s when he was in 8th grade, I believe, and also, Sage ran right around 4:30 in 8th grade as well.
For girls, it's Georgie Clarke(Aus), 4:24.96 1500(=4:46), age 12, in '97. Mary Decker did 4:55.0 indoor mile at 13, in '72. Sarah Hopkinson(GB) did 4:39.84 (=5:02?,but 5:00.2 pace) at 11, in '91.
to the guy asking about progression, mine and some of my junior high friends:
me-8th-5:10 1600 12th-4:01
gabe-8th-5:20 1600 12th-4:13 1600
paulo-ran mid 5:20-30s i thin 12th-4:21
Sage ran 4:30 as an 8th grader.
Torres ran 4:33 in 8th grade, don't know earlier. He was the leader of the factory at MacArthur.
Kevin Sullivan ran about 3:54 for 1500m in 8th grade (as a 13 year old). I think he also ran 1:53 or so for 800m.
I ran 4:54 1500m at age 11 and 4:36 at age 12, which is like a 5:12 and a 4:53...
But my 5000m would have qualified me for the national meet in the young men division I ran 16:56 at age 11, and 16:48 at age 12 only ran the 5000m on the track once each year but it might be a record never really looked into it because it was at an all comers meet...
i ran a 5:01 in 6th grade and won a pizza, i was 11, so I imagine that there are some fast 10 year old times.
i am a girl and i ran a 4:59 in the mile when I was in 7th(13) grade so I'm sure there are people faster than me
I had a teammate run 2:00-800, 4:24-1600 9:28-3200 in the eight grade. thats pretty impresive.
"Torres ran 4:33 in 8th grade, don't know earlier. He was the leader of the factory at MacArthur."
But then Wheeling Track screwed him up.
David Gonzalas from illinois ran for Bolingbrook in the mid 90's ran 424 in 8th grade won numberous national titles in grade school. He went on to run for ohio state. Probably the best grade school miler ever!!!!!!!
His conjoined fetus sister ran 4:21.5, making her the fastest girl.
These I believe are the correct International age records
Unfortunately, I had to race against Soto, Barrios, and Lawton. Looks like Eric Anderson gets the prize.
