Rupp to redshirt outdoors

Donkey punching who? Dorian Ulrey? Michael Coe? Really, other than Sam Chelanga who can you honestly say in the 3K and 5K is the kind of guy who should win indoor nationals? It was a down year and he ran one good time (7:48) and won a super slow tactical 5K. There was no Lamong or Solinsky this year. Dorian Ulrey isn't Manzano. Outkicking him is not slaying Goliath. Do I credit Rupp for getting his medals? Well done, man. But I wasn't really blown away by any single race. That being said, is redshirting a good idea? I absolutely think so.

This makes no sense unless he is getting some serious benefits for staying at Oregon. What college kid isn't going to want to head out and get money while you still can? He should have his degree this year right? Why the f*** would he hang around the NCAA system?

i understand what your saying, and I seriously doubt this is even true (because if they are going for the 4 x mile record they'd want him, though they do have a 3:41 guy which is essentially still 4 sub 4 guys without Galen) a few reasons that come to mind:

1) Grad school

2) He's having a blast with the Oregon guys and is still making major improvements and qualifying for Olympic and World Championship Teams

3) Because he can (if that rule is true)

Next year in the summer there is nothing of major significance and he actually still has an indoor season left I believe too.

Apparently, it is dependent upon receiving the activities waiver. Vin and company are aware of the significance of an NCAA win at home in 2010 and are supportive of Salazar and Galen's intentions.

As noted, there are no big championships in '10 and Rupp can focus on running fast, possibly even an AR in the 10,000 m. He would like to do this in Eugene, but I have not heard when.

I like the kidd and am a Salazar supporter. I live in Eugene and know how great that would be to do that stuff and win the outdoor meet here. But I just don't think that is as good as in a calender year winning 6 National Championship races and 3 team national championships. Winning those 6 championship races should be enough to make his year as good as anyone has ever had in college at any time. IF he was ready to run 26:50 I would say skip the outdoor season and focus on the world championships also, but he is not ready yet to compete with those guys on the track.

That stupid kid still wants to hang with college dweebs. He should *officially* turn pro, move out of Track Piss Hole Town, and run the international circuit.

Well he's certainly not the only kid to ever use a 6th year for eligibility, a lot of people have done it for grad school, and for some just to finish school.

Also, if I had the choice as a native Oregonian and U of O runner to finish my NCAA championships in Eugene or Fayatville, I know which one I'd choose. Additionally, from a planning standpoint it really makes more sense to be able to focus on the world championships this summer (not have to worry about 5K's and 10K's at conference, regionals and NCAA's) while next year he has no summer championship to peak for.

I know people will be jealous of this if it indeed happens, but you certainly can't blame someone for making a wise and beneficial decision, even if it means others will be jealous. It hurts him economically because he could have grossed over a half million by now if he would have sign two years ago and he'll be missing out on the next 15 months of salary and bonuses. That's not including other endoresments and fees he's missing out on. If the young man is willing to pass on that for a while longer (I know most of us wouldn't) than I admire him for it.

Honestly, who came up with this rumor. I doubt this is true. I think he will run outdoors, help the team win NCAA and go pro. I'll believe this when I believe it.

At first I thought the same thing, if that NCAA rule is true though, than it actually seems sensible to do it. Though it would also be sensible not to do it depending on how you look at it.

So far I haven't heard anyone dispute that rule, so it still seems possible to me that this could happen.

With everything we know about Rupp, his family's financial sacrifices, the level he is at now, who in their right mind would take the bait on this thread. Rupp is done with the NCAA in Fayetville. End of story.

a lot of people asked that same question before, and NCAA's is in Eugene next year. not saying you are wrong, but stranger things have certainly happened here.
