Word is that for 2009 outdoors, Rupp will focus on USATF in Eugene and then Berlin World Championships. By redshirting outdoors he can finish his college career with the U of Oregon hosting the 2010 NCAA outdoor meet. He has indoor eligibility for 2010 as well. This will allow better opportunities to take down Rono's 13:08 5000m and the out of season 27:22 10,000m.
The lack of an Olympics or World Championships in 2010 apparently played a role in the decision to redshirt.

False. He competed outdoors in 2005 (AJR and 10K duel with Ches), 2006 (didn't make a final), 2007 (27:33 Cardinal), redshirted 2008.
This be his last outdoor season.
Since he qualified for the Olympic team in 2008, he can actually get an activities waiver for the 2008 season which would extend his 5 year clock to 6 years. It is essentially the same rule that allows some international athletes a 6th year.
So, not sure if this rumor is true or not, but he could technically use activities waiver for 2008, redshirt 2009 and be a senior at Oregon Spring 2010.
From the NCAA Manual:
Extensions of the five-year period of eligibility for
student-athletes...shall be based on the following criteria: The member institution in which the student-athlete is enrolled must establish to the satisfaction of the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement (by bjective evidence) that the student-athlete was unable to participate in intercollegiate athletics as a result of participation in one of the activities listed in the above legislation for a specific period of time. Further, such an extension shall be limited to one time and for a period not to exceed one year per student-athlete, per sport.
The activities "listed above" were World Champs, World Cup, World Students, Pan Am or Olympics Games.

Considering that Rupp is probably one of America's best distance runner right now (along with Fam, Abdi, Lagat, and Meb), I support his decision. But if he redshirts this season why not just go pro now?

He needs to stop toying around college kids and get on to competing against the world's best. Beatin up on the NCAA at this point (or 2010) serves no developmental purpose at all. Get on with your professional career, AFTER, you break the collegiate 5,000 outdoor record this spring.

He may run faster than 3:55 but he will not have the indoor mile record by the time he leaves college.
