how in the world were they able to concentrate and train during the 40s with war and desolation raging all around them? You can be sure that they weren't going out on the roads for any distance runs but probably sticking to a 'safe' track for 100% of their training. (which wouldn't be that unusal for the training of those days anyway). Can you imagine if they could have had the fall buildup of 80-100+ mile weeks of distance training like guys did in the 70s? 3:57s for sure.

The average age of American soldiers in WWII was 26, as compared to 19 in Vietnam. It is hard to believe still that U.S. ground troops landed in Europe only as late as June 6, 1944 when the war essentially began in 1936 and began in official earnest in 1939. (Obviously we entered the war directly only at the end of 1941, so it took 2 and a half years to land in Europe--obviously we fought the Japanese and Germans elsewhere prior to 1944).
Andersson and Haag's rivalry really amounts to another history often forgotten and had the war not taken place, would surely have produced the first sub-4 in the early 1940s. There is a great children's book set in WWII about taking Swedish (Norwegian?) gold bricks on sleds past Nazi soldiers to aid the Allied war effort and prevent them from funding the Germans. Does anyone remember that?

Finland was allied with Germany during WWII so Hitler didn't storm in and take over there. The Soviet Union invaded Finland in 1940 and the Finns needed help. When the US declared war on the Axis Powers in 1941 Finland was psecifically excepted from the declaration.
Sweden was never at war so Hagg and Andersson were able to race as much as they liked. Sweden was cooperative to some degree with the Germans which was the price of avoiding hostilities. That didn't endear them to the Norweigans.
Ray is most certainly an American, straight from the Constittion State.

Hägg almost never trained on the track. Most of his training was done off road in very tough terrain.
Do Hagg/Anderson still hold the Swedish records for the mile/1500?

exactly. my employer helped set set up a dummy corporation in Sweden in the 1930's for Nazi-controlled Bosch so they could sell goods to the rest of the world. The Wallenbergs(except Raoul) had some profits from the war.
