Blacks were not even allowed to go to the same schools as whites, eat at the same restaurants as whites, or even drink from the same fountains as whites until the 1960's for crying out loud. It took us over 230 years to elect a president that wasn't white! I don't think the U.S. does a good job of blending its ethnicities.

In this country a minority is alway blamed and villified at one point or another. Blacks have gone through shit, Asians have gone through shit, and now Hispanics are going through shit. Just look at some of the posts here and you'll see examples of the negative attitudes towards Latinos. Is it so bad that some people are celebrating Fernandez, Manzano, Cabada, Estrada, and others as being Latino? Yes they are Americans, but they are also young Latinos who are serving as positive role models for a growing Latino population in this country. What's wrong with that? I think it's ok to celebrate these guys as Americans, Latinos, runners, human beings, and positive role models. Let's embrace them in ALL that they are and not belittle any part of their being. Yes???

The US does have a terrible history with being prejudiced against African Americans and other ethinicities but we're still waaaaaaay better than a lot of places.

Dude! I went to Belmont High in L.A. back in the 80's, is that what you're talking about? There were less than 20 white guys there including me. Two of the white guys were maniacs and everyone was scared of them. I just made sure I stayed away from all of the trouble makers. The school sucked. But I did learn how most Mexicans really are instead of the propaganda we see on TV about nice hard working people blah blah blah. Did you go there then? The graduation rate was only about 25% and that was the white guys and all the Chinese students from Chinatown. Glad to have gotten out of Echo Park although I hear it's being gentrified now. I'd have to see it to believe it. What a mess. Roman Gomez was a great runner when he went there but he wouldn't have looked so good if had been running in the 70's instead of the 80's I guess. He got intimidated in college and ended up quitting running and getting fat. Waste of talent.
