This list is seriously flawed. Here's a "fill in the blank" test: "Have I told you about my son/daughter? Very impressive -- he/she is a ____________ now." Military people are highly respected, but it's not viewed as a very prestigious occupation. Same goes for police, and to some extent teachers.
You can also use "barrier to entry" as a good proxy -- in other words, how difficult is it to gain the basic credentials to begin Career X? Relatively speaking, it's very hard to get into medical school, pretty hard to get into a decent law school, not hard to get into college, and obviously very simple to join the military or start trying to sell shit.
I would re-order as such:
1. Doctor
2. Lawyer
3. Business Owner
4. Engineer
5. Banker
6. Teacher
7. Police
8. Marketing
9. Salesman
10. Military
Obvious, this list can more or less useful on a case-by-case basis. Commander-in-chief is more prestigious of a position than an MD that graduated from an off-shore med school. Especially "business owner" -- this will depend on whether you're talking about a nail salon vs. a high-tech company.
