Gregson 5K Results

These guys (Fernandez/Gregson) must love the fact that all of you blab about them all day, every day.

Isnt the Burnie 10km that road race that everyone goes to to get their PR as it has a net elevation drop of 900 M ??

sure thing. cept its an out and back course. so figure that out

it starts and finishes in the same place AND drops 900m. Best course in the world. It also had a tail wind the whole way.

German >> Gregson over 8km cross country.

I predict top 8 for German, 40+ for Gregson. German is a 5k/10k guy that can also run a 3:55mi at 18. Gregson is a 1500m/miler that just had a breakthrough, but can't match that performance over longer distances. It won't be close in Jordan between these two.

29:09 doesn't indicate anything close to 13:25. 28:15 might not even indicate sub 13:30. And Birmingham's badly beaten 6th in that race indicates not that Gregson was really tough to beat, but rather than Birmingham was running a tempo pace or was out of shape. 6 weeks is actually a pretty good build-up if you already have good basic fitness (which he did, as demonstrated by the fact that he was running a 10k pr late last year).

Collis definately wasnt out of shape... remember this race was sandwiched between his 43:xx 15km and no 13:16 5000m in the rain and wind. Maybe he tempoed it or Gregson was just in really fine form that day. And Im not sure how well basic fitness lasts when you take something like 6 weeks off? Thats a little more than German's two weeks off then two weeks of cross training...

Gregson in 13.50 shape runs 3.37 1500m.

Fernandez in ~13.20 'shape' (as rumoured) runs 3.55 mile.

What will happen when Gregson gets into 13.20 shape as he surely will??? Probably something around 3.30.

Will Fernandez then be in 12.50 shape??

collis would have been back in the country no more than a week - after a lengthy time overseas.. not ideal

still atleast 6 weeks before his 15k at great aus run!

By "Gregson was just in really fine form that day," do you mean "Gregson and the other four dudes who beat Collis were just in really fine form that day"? Whatever props you're going to give Ryan for that race, you have to give to the other guys too.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm a big Gregson booster. But one single data point means nothing, whether it's a good day (beating Collis in a road race) or a bad day (running a mediocre 13:56). Clearly he's faster than 13:56 and slower than 13:16 right now -- where exactly, we don't know, though we'll get an indication in Jordan.

Gregson has his last race before Jordan over 3km tomorrow

A 14 min 5k and a 29 min 10k are about equal performances. Roads tend to be a bit slower (assuming unaided accurate course) but nothing to suggest that a 13:25. The whole stuff because you beat a guy in one race that you can run the same time as him is just crap. Obviously with 3:37 speed, sub 13:30 isn't unreasonable but there are a lot of 3:37 guys that can not run 13:30.

German's times all fall off after the mile. For instance, 6.8 seconds faster than Rupp's mile PR at the same age, but only 1.2 better than his 3k at the same point, and his 23:20s/30s don't suggest anything that much better than Luke and Derrick's 5k times. A 13:20 guy would be more like 22:50s for 8k Cross. An 13:3X time would actually be a good time for German.

Yeah, his 3k's less better than Rupp's. Duh. That's 'cause he was sick and ran a huge negative split, closing in 3:03 or so. German could run a 13:40 in trainers by himself right now. If he doesn't break 13:20, his outdoor season will have been a disaster (compared to his indoor).
