a lot of the kenyans i know would fall somewhere in the middle on this. they want a relatively heavy but unstructured shoe - something that rides and flexes like a trainer but is a bit heavier and has a bit of cushion to it.
a lot of the guys i know like the pegasus. at one of the puma camps the guys would come back from europe with whatever new trainers puma had given them and give them to the local kids - and then pull out some of the less structured asics shoes to train in. a number of the guys there also really like the adidas supernova classic - plenty of cushion, lots of flex, but a very natural roll.
i've know a fair number of kenyan runners who trained for years in second-hand broken down trainers. once they got noticed a sponsor would give them new shoes, and shortly thereafter lower leg injuries would pop up. maybe a connection, maybe not, but i saw this in several athletes.
