excellent post - but keep in mind it is very difficult to get through to someone you need to educate before you can even argue with. On a bit of a similar note I was just about ready to shoot myself last week if I would have seen one more national news story about Oprah and her weight gain issues. What a messed up country - and on top of it all I'm from Illinois - Go Blago! Face the facts the apocalypse is near. Good Lord get me out of here.

There was a time when Cox was going to be an Ironman. I forget when...3-4 years ago.

Guess that didn't pan out.

My favorite Cox moment was when he finally got some alone time with that girl on the show (Jen?), and he spent that time talking about his training schedule. The quizical look on her face was priceless.

Nobody knows the depth of him. Nobody.

I read that post differently than you did. I thought they were just comparing time away from the sport.

My fathers death still effects me (15 years later). However, achilles surgery took me away from the sport for a longer period of time.

At least if someone you know dies, you can run (unless it's you who passed)to help work out your issues. If you're injurred, you have to develop another way of working through your problems.

Obviously there's a lot of facetiousness there, but also some truth. When a runner gets injurred their main coping mechanism is gone. Now they have to figure out some way of releasing tensions and finding a place to work through roblems other than what they've probably have used all their lives.

short course on the OT course? i doubt that. trent ran 212 on a true course on a tough freezing day in 2004.

I think the point remains the same. JOSH COX HAS NO MORE UPSIDE THAN TRENT BRINEY. It is just that many of you have a man crush on Josh Cox. There was no thread about Trent Briney's comeback after he ran 2:19 at Twin Cities.

I believe this is fact, not speculation. I'll have to track down the appropriate source - until then, believe what you want.

The trials course wasn't short.

How did Josh Cox run on that short course? Several minutes slower than Briney.

Josh Cox is to running what American Idol is to music. He may fool the maases but when comparisons to any of the real marathoners come into play, Josh will always fall short.

I actually ran my besttimes during my wifes terminal illness, and after her death.I ran each race full out as if it were the last one I would ever run.Point being we all handle tradgedy differently. I believe that if Josh believes he can come back and do some outstanding times.

Cox's former coach, Kevin McCarey, thinks Cox has mismanaged his career and that his best days are behind him.

"Some people learn from their lessons," said McCarey, himself a former 2:13 marathoner. "He never learned from his lessons. His running ended a long time ago."

From a training perspective, McCarey offers three main criticisms of Cox: that he logged far too many miles; that he ran too much by himself; and that he let himself be coached by Italy's Dr. Gabriele Rosa, who often went months without seeing Cox train.

"Yeah, I did too many miles," admitted Cox, who once racked up consecutive weeks of 188, 186, 175 and 172 miles, at altitude. "That was five years ago. I've learned."

To a degree, it pains McCarey to be so critical of Cox.

"As a human being, he's one of the most quality people I've ever met on this planet," McCarey said. "Just a very loving human being."

Yet McCarey's criticism doesn't stop with Cox's training.

"He got into other things. You can't get into other things if you're a marathoner, if you want to be one of the best," McCarey said. "You have to devote yourself to it, and he didn't."

I remember Cox showing up at the early Stanford meet in '05, prancing around a few laps and then going to a table to hock a book or massage thing or something else that was his sponsor or something. Where is he getting the sponsorship from now?

Comparing a parent's death to an injury = classless. Nice job, moron.

From a performance point of view it's immeasurable. Get over yourself dickweed.

Josh hasn't really raced too much in the past few years and as a result I don't think a lot of people (herein referred to as: haters) are giving him a fair kick at the can. Lets remember that Josh is a 2:13 guy and he is still only 33. Look at Jon Brown who is 37 I believe and just ran 2:12 a few weeks ago. If nothing else, Josh is a great amabassador for the sport of running. Keep up the good work Josh. I can't wait till he drops the ball and leaves all the haters scratching their heads.
