Muscle memory is a strange thing. I'm sure he was doing at least a ride or two a week while he was "training" for his 2:45 and his speaking/banging Olsen twin engagements.
You take "a year off". Run only a couple times a week. You'll get fat. The weight is what slows you down the most, not the lack of running. Now, a year later start training again. In 6-12 months you'll be back to your usual self.
When you go through a period of detraining it does not take nearly the same time to regain that fitness. In fact it takes very little to maintain fitness for quite some time. Many WRs and Olympic medals have been won by runners who were forced to take time off due to injury/surgery leading up to their performance.
Plus there's the drugs...but if you assume everyone is on them does is really amount to an advantage?

If he lost 20 lbs, it was AFTER he put on 20+. He did not lose 20lbs from his typical cycling weight. He will probably weigh the same as he did during his best tours, because he knows he has to to be at his best. But I doubt he will be a better climber than he was at his peak. That's unlikely (if he even approaches that ability, he will have a great chance of winning).

The Original post is a lie. Go to velonews.com and look at the pictures and stories and you will see. There was no "uphill race".
Bruyneel does say that Armstrong is in the top-3, which surprised me. Contador and Leipheimer are always in top shape and very fit. Levi won ATOC in February, 3rd in TdG and the Dauphine', then an Olympic medal in August and then 2nd at the Vuelta.
So if Lance really is going that well, and that isn't just hyperbole, then that is good news. If you look at the photos, however, he looks MUCH heavier than the rest. Now I know that he used to race at 158 and Contador and Leipheimer are both shorter and about 135, but he definitely looks heavier than somebody who is supposedly sticking it to the rest of the team.

He never stopped riding. Even during his marathon training, Carmichael had him cross training on the bike (according to JoggersWorld). He trained for Leadville. It's not like he just quit training completely. For those who think he'll split the team - who's going to ride for Contrador?
Contador had surgery a few weeks ago. The first ride at camp was his first day on the bike since his surgery. Lance has been training for months. All the other Astana riders are coming back after time off from the previous season. Lance may or may not be in the best shape right now, but things will dramatically change a few months from now. Contador is hands down the favorite to win The Tour. Lance will certainly be a force when the season starts, but that is a long way off.
running helps biking because it works your cardiac system better (higher aerobic capacity which can be built over time) biking does not help running to that extent because it is more anaerobic and the human anaerobic capacity has a known maximum which can easily be reached in 4 weeks (you cant improve it long term)... any questions?
