As a college coach, this is why I don't make phone calls (I have spoke about 10 minutes on the phone this year).
When I was being recruited, I couldn't stand the calls after awhile and found it hard to tell coaches I wasn't interested. Some high schoolers just don't have the confidence to inform the coaches that they aren't interested.
Just let the coaches know as soon as you can talk to them that you are looking elsewhere and that you appreciate them recruiting you. Wish the good luck and be on your way. End it on good terms.
Don't you find it difficult to recruit then?
My daughter just committed. In the end it came down to two schools, as it almost always does. Both coaches were very active recruiting her, but they didn't bug the crap out of her either. A third school she liked too, but the coach never called her (but told her in email and on her official visit that she was her #1 distance recruit). She just assumed because the coach never called he really wasn't that interested. These kids have egos - they need to feel like they're wanted.
I know it must suck calling tons of kids, but that's the life of a college coach.
