I’m only about 10+ yrs late on this, so yeah, I’m that guy this one time. I was there when Jerry started running in freshman cross country at Chittenango High school. We were all skinny and weak and developing. Kid in our class was a year older than us, Jeff Phelps, smoked all of us and was the best runner in the school early on. It was a long time ago, but as I look back into the fuzz of distant memory I believe Jerry used this period to build toughness, skill, and strategy, and started to really challenge JP, and occasionally beat him. A couple years later JP quits athletics altogether and Jerry got really fast, tough, and strong. I’m godfather to JPs kids, so I still remember a little bit of all this. Me, I did 25 yrs in the Army, Airborne Ranger, 5 wars, and I had to run for work, but I hated it. Turns out I’ve had a touch of asthma all these years. Go figure. Anyway, Lawson’s great, proud of him, and a good representative of how we grew up tough in Upstate NY in those days.
