There was no strategy to beat Bekele these past few weeks that would have worked. 3 of the best 5k runners in the world created a plan to beat Bekele together and couldn't do it. He ran his last 2k faster than some people in the final could run all out for 2k.
Right now Bekele is arguably the most invincible 5k/10k runner ever. He is close to his peak physical age and has more experience winning championship races than anyone still active. The only major losses he has i can think of are the 2003 5k, the 2004 5k, and the World XC in the heat. Think about that... every other world championships/world cross/olympics he has won. The guys is race savvy.
Furthermore, there is no else in his physical ball park right now. There is no Geb, El G, or Tergat that serves as an athlete of a generation to compete with Bekele. Kipchoge, Soi, etc are all fine athletes, but they won't go down as all time greats. At least in 2002/2003 Geb was still in top form to compete with Bekele. Wanjiru may be as strong as Bekele and will eventually be able to hang with him in the 10k, but most likely does not have Bekele's speed.
Maybe by 2012 Bekele's age and Wanjiru's experience/greater shape will make the 10k competitive. For the 5k, I think it will take a sub 3:30 1500 runner to move up, develop the strength, and outkick Bekele.
