the USPS!!!!!!!
As far as the press, the U.S. Marines always get the attention. DOD requests for USMC operations, press conferences, etc. are packed with journalists, while others receive mild attention.
SBS
USMC does not duplicate schools using the other branches generic specialty schools for training whereever possible to save costs, thus they trains at the same courses that the GB, NS, DF uses. After the generic training is completed, Recon Marines have their own school that further emphasizes aspects of Recon. Also all Marine infantry, weapons, etc. officers, enlisted, and units are trained for special operations and are used interchangeably with Recon. A United States Marine is a United States Marine.
Two words:
Knights Templar
United States Air Force Pararescue
Rememeber back in the Bosnia War, they were going to use Recon for the rescue of the USAF pilot shot down. Recon was up all night waiting to go and became sleepy, so they used marines from one of the weapons platoon for the "special operation". All marines are trained for special operations, versatility saves the Pentagon money and lives, even though it is not the primary mission of the Marine Corps to "save lives".
They don't train for war on bicycles.

While they're all extremely competent soldiers in the traditional sense, each special operations force has their own purpose and thus strong points. So you can't really compare them directly. That said, the British SAS is the most respected unit in the world. Many outfits in other countries, like Delta in the US, were modeled after the SAS with great success.
To answer the question, if I were a wanted man the last group of dudes I'd want coming after me would be the SAS.
I have nothing but praise for the UK SAS, they are good, but I would definitely not say they are the most competent soldiers in the world; by all objective measures, the U.S. Army RANGERS are the best light infantry soldiers. Other than that, it is difficult to compare, because each group has a different mission. Israel, Belgium and Australia have excellent special command units, but like I said, it is difficult to compare. No mater whether you are an elite Marine, Delta, SEALS, U.S. Special Forces or a NATO country Special Forces, the U.S. Army RANGER tab is one of the most coveted insignia and training. (This is what you want on your resume no matter where you end up.)
I am fortunate to have been a part of a couple multinational forces and have trained with many militaries around the world; the average American soldier or Marine is better trained than what most countries call their elite units. Also, it is not always a matter of being a member of a special command, I have seen great units within the 10th Mountain, 82nd and 101st Divisions, etc., that are just as good when they have excellent leadership and strive to be the best.
Btw – The Airforce Special Tactics group operate with Navy SEALs, Army Special Forces, and Rangers. STG airmen are specially trained to seize enemy airfields and recover distressed personnel in hostile territory. Air Force STG candidates endure some of the military's toughest training. I think their 35 week course is the longest basic training period of any SCOM unit.
SAS, etc. are simply older career guys in their late 20's from conventional armies featured and blown up by public relations professionals for the media. There is nothing extraordinary about them when you look at the tactics, esprit-de-corps, accomplishments, etc. Basically it's alot of Pentagion power-point presentations and video clips from 4-star generals.
To beat the terrorists, the coalition must form new suicide units that use the similar tactics as Taliban, Al-Quaeda, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hizballah, etc. Members of the conventional armies would volunteer knowing that they are going to die. The terrorists pay a reward to every so-called "Martyr for Islam". The Pentagon should have a similar created to ensure their families are well taken care of.
That's the only way to convince the average citizen of the middle east to support the coalition. Now the terrorists have the propaganda edge on us.
If you want to beat them you have to learn how they think. Read both sides. Really look at how they think in an objective manner. So far they have been able to muster every generation since Biblical times to fight one invader after another. There is no reason to think they can't continue to war with us and Israel until the sun burns itself out.
French Foriegn Legion Paratroopers
Best special op of the last 500 years was the poisoning of Ariel Sharon by Palestinian moles planted in the Mossad 20 years ago (or so they say nobody really knows for sure).
having a gun makes it pretty easy to be a hero... i would like to see a world without guns and then truly find out who is the toughest...hand to hand, man against man, who is the TOUGHEST? or at least what group of men are the toughest, obviously women don't count because they have small brains, it's science
Samurai? Cherokee? Aztec? Lacedemonian (Spartan)? Georges St. Pierre? the world would be very different if you didn't have to pull a trigger...and way more badass
I work very closely with all the American special forces. In my opinion SEALS are the best because they are much more diverse than any other. The water is really what seperates them from the rest of America. Delta is the cream of the crop for the Army. The best rangers are green beret and the best green beret become Delta. Pararescue guys are amazing. They could probably reattach your leg if it was blown off. They are some of the most sought after guys for groups like Black water. Marine force recon... not to impressive considering they are marines. I once saw them complain because they had to go for a swim in the ocean. But they are the best of the toughest military branch.
SAS are the worlds best. Eastern Europe has very good special forces along with Isreal, Austrailian SAS, and of course the French foreign legion.
How did i forget Chief Sitting Bull and his scrapy Sioux, defeating General Custer and all his troops at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Total baddass
Having been in one of the groups mentioned, I'll say that I think you're pretty right on.
And for the force recon comment, I remember seeing a group of them beaching an IBS and it looked odd. It took me a minute before I realized they had inflatable life vests sstrapped over their kapoks. They didn't really like getting out of that boat either. Heh. It was funnies thing, and I think what you say it true, but I really do have huge respect for what they do.
Good post man.
strapped.... funniest....
Dammit!
I worked in the Pentagon as a law student and the marines Reconnaisance are the toughest SOBs by far. Recon is in combat every day. The number of days in combat are the same as marine infantry units and they perform the most daring missions regularly unlike the other services which spend most of their time in the rear not in combat each day. Another major observation. Recon marines look the part in person. They have the look of death even when wearing civvies. They walk and talk the part. The other service SFs are gentlemanly, often jovial and preppy, although manly nonetheless. The Recon leadership is also awesome. Recon does not allow Pentagon career staffers to ticket punching for 1 month to get an administrative service medal and a promo. The Recon marine captians, lts, sergeant majors, tops, 1st shirts, etc. are badder asses than the lower ranks, take more risks, and get killed more often too.
