Unless I'm mistaken, Nelson and McAdams were nowhere near catching him as he eased his way across the line at the trials. Nobody was close to catching him in either of the steeples he did earlier in the season either. Like him or not, he is hands down the best active steepler in the US right now.

Yeah, I am not a big Fam supporter, but he has dominated his domestic competition this year.

i have to say that I like him...in fact his steeple at the trials inspired me to really start training again...maybe he is no Prefontaine but for those of us too young to remember Pre he is as close as we have--the way he took the trials race from the gun and never relinquished, sometimes leading by almost an entire straightaway, was something I don't think I have ever seen in upper-echelon competition...

Maybe the remark was off-color, but he seems like a nice guy to me who loves competing even more than just the act of running

As has been mentioned there are several high profile steeplers who have come up dirty and maybe he does have reason to believe that the Africans are cheating since kenya absolutely dominates the event despite the fact that their form is usually not great (I also think it has been reported on here that it is hard to find an operational barrier in Kenya although I'm sure that was mostly jest)

The point is that while maybe he should have shut up, he is a great runner and will represent America with passion. Moreover the comment he was trying to make, I think, was not as much about who is doping as it was about the spirit of the Olympics. It shouldn't be all about getting more Gold Medals than China or Russia even if WE have to cheat to do it. The Olympics should be about fostering goodwill between the youth of nations and competing to the absolute best of your abilities, even if realistically that is a bronze medal or no medal. It isn't just about Gold, it is about showing up and representing the spirit of your nation and yourself.

Fam is such a joke saying all of this. Vaguely insinuating that your failure to truly compete is due to others cheating you, without being man enough to say who? Sad.

He doesn't deserve to step on the same track as the Cherono brothers, Kemboi, et al, and even if he does final (which I doubt) he is going to get eaten alive.

What he needs to do is go train in Eldoret for a year or four and see the best performance enhancer out there. Intense training, massive volume, healthy diet, no distractions, incredible training partners, altitude. THAT is why Fam won't even sniff a medal this summer.

Opps, I conflated the recent Tour busts with that. It's been a busy few weeks on the doping front.

Do people and perhaps Fam himself realize he has broken 8:20 maybe 5 times? His PR is 8:17. Guys like Lincoln (8:08) and Crogan (8:09) can complain about missing out on a medal, but not Fam. At best, Fam can wine about possibly being kept out of the finals because of 1-4 dopers at the Games in steeplechase.

The commentaries that compare Fam's altitude training with the Kenyans' training rely on a false assumption, that a few years of training is comparable to thousands of years adaptation. In short, training can not account for differences in changed physiology. "People who habitually live at altitude have often spent thousands of years developing disproportionately large chests and lungs, increasing their their density of oxygen-bearing red blood cells by almost a third, though there are limits to how much thickening with red cells the blood supply can stand (Bill Bryson)". Until evidenced of doping, I will support the goodwill supposedly fostered by the games, and I will especially support all the American competitors.
