Then to what do you attribute the disproportionate number of black men currently in the penal system? You don't sound to be attributing it to genetics, or you wouldn't have mentioned the engineers, lawyers, and doctors. Your original statement, suggesting that without the slave trade we wouldn't have so many murders in our black communities, sounds to be drawing a direct relation between economic standings (as slavery was an economic institution, plus the Jim Crow years made sure land-ownership was nearly impossible) and crime rates.
The folks on top will always be stepping on the folks on the bottom -- this isn't just a problem in the US. We've been set up to fail. Fortunately the tide started turning in the '60s and, as you mention, there are more and more opportunities to become doctors, lawyers, president, etc.
