No, the BRRs are life time runners that could teach a young whipper snapper like you a thing or two. They are "anti-yuppie jogger" just like any other committed runners. They don't run with music. They care about their own running, and push themselves. Many of the oldsters still maintain course records in several races in our state(across age groups) waiting to be broken by people that quit running. They care about American distance running, and most of all they give to the sport. Why do you think the Winter XC Championships went off the way they did last year. BRR support, and Peter Julian's committment.

Runners are runners. They don't stop.

That's the difference between a jogger and a runner.

I can't speak to the situation in Boulder, but I think most people here on training runs roll up all kinds of runners, walkers and the occasional cyclist without intending to. I always find it a ackward moment when I roll someone up because I do not want them to think I am some cocky sob trying to race them I just happen to go faster than they do.. it's even more weird when I go for a out and back run and roll someone up near the turnaround point and than end up coming back as they still are going out, I suspect they think I am not going very far and just wanted to pass them.

8:00 minute miles may be slow for some of us, but I am sure when I am on my road bike and some hard core cyclist passes me while I am doing a measily 34km/h he must think I am weak.

Without Pete Julian the XC meet wouldn't have happened, without BRR it still would've happened. What do the BRR "give to the sport"? If they're so supportive then why can't they attract young competitive runners? Why don't they ever have sub-masters teams or even sub-masters individual runners? That club is dying because it's self-serving solely to the remaining constituency, it'll be pretty much gone in less than ten years as hips and knees continue to fall apart. Bank on it.

I don't know the details, but I'm pretty sure the BRR ponied up some pretty big coin to send Barringer to Europe this Summer. I think they did the same thing last Summer.

I do and they did, but Barringer is just one runner and she isn't drawing sub-masters runners into that group. Great gesture but to what ultimate end? I'd rather see them help support a group of runners who don't have a full ride provided to them. Barringer's going to be no less great regardless of whether she races in Europe while in college. One-time things like XC Nationals are something they can pin to their lapels on their puffed-out chests but don't really have a lasting local impact. What can be traced to the legacy of that race just two years later? This is a group that has in effect sat idly by as Boulder has deteriorated as a training scene for elites and sub-elites in the past two decades, they chose to remain self-involved for the most part.

The average US citizen could not finish a 5k race in under 30 minutes.

8 minutes per mile is actually a pretty fast pace when you are talking about the general population. Also, many elite distance races do a lot of their training around that pace.

So, yes, on any generic running trail 8 minute pace seems fast. You're talking recreation and not competition.

Many of the people you pass might be able to smoke you in a race.

I just roll up, grab their ipod, chuck it in the woods, and then kick them in the shin on the way back when I pass them. I'm taking my routine on the road to Boulder.

Most of my distance running is at 7:30 - 8:00 pace, and often I do this on a popular track. In six years of running on that track, I have been passed by fewer than 10 people at that pace, and I have passed several hundred (maybe a thousand) other runners.

8:00 pace is not fast to those on this board, but it is very fast in the context of all those who run in the US.

Who really cares what your training pace is?

There are plenty of 20 min 5k racers that run that fast in their training.

Although I myself (near grandmaster 35 min 10k runner)prefer around 9 min pace on a nice 2-3 hour run up and down the trails around Boulder.

BRR doesn't have many younger runners on their club teams because they do not give them any financial incentive compared to Fleet Feet, which gives great discounts on running attire, free uniforms, comp. entries to races, etc... The younger runners don't have the financial resources of a retired 60 something year old.

BRR is sending Barringer to Europe again this year at a cost of about $4,000. I would not be very surprised if she made a nice donation back to the club when she turns pro.

And yes for many of the local races there is a strong sense of family with this group because they have been together for decades. Any event that BRR is involved with is always well run. Accurate length courses clearly marked and professional timing.

BRR has little to do with that in any of the races they're "involved with." And Durden couldn't accurately time a race if his three pair of sweatsuits depended on it.

That's very funny. When I lived in Boulder a few years ago, I would often see the Japanese runners running up and down 28th Street. Often times it would be during rush hour traffic.
