I believe modern pentathlon also uses this system.

You should have a look at the IAAF rules and see how much of an overhaul you'd have to do to rules 162 and 165.
As a matter of fact I did look at the rules, and yes, you would need to change them. But this is a case where they should change the rules for the sake of spectator-friendliness, because it doesn't detract at all from the competiveness of the event.
How are you going to determine someone left early when your starter is just yelling 'go' (as suggested previously)?
Well, they could judge it, just like they do now. You think they have fancy electronics to detect false starts in the decathlon 1500? And I suggested yelling "Go!" for mid-level college meets where nobody's going to give a sh*t if your yelled Go is 0.2 seconds off. In major meets you would use the "beeping" machine they use for XC skiing.
Using past competitions as some kind of guideline for false starts when you are proposing a significant alteration to the starting process is rather meaningless.
Making the argument that we shouldn't change the rules because it will cause a big problem with false starts when false starts are exceeding rare is also rather meaningless. Yes, there needs to be a false start rule. No, it's not a big issue because it will hardly ever get enforced.
For that matter, what time do you use for calculating total points for the decathlon? Their net running time or the time between when the leader started and the particular athlete finished?
Unless you have a better idea I would suggest using the time it took them to run 1500 meters.
Seems like a lot of stretching to make things complicated just so there can be some idealized scenario of having the first across the finish line of the 1500 as the overall event winner.
Idealized scenario? It will definitely be a realized scenario that the winner of the 1500 will be the winner of the event. Why don't we just hold timed heats in the open 400 instead of having that idealized scenario of having a final, where the first guy across the finish line wins?
Nice concept, but you don't have all the javelin or discus throwers go at the same time so you can instantaneously see who won, rather than waiting for everyone to take all their allowed throws.
Because, of course, that would be ridiculous.
