back when i was playing other sports and not doing any distance running i couldnt have picked a runner off the streets as an athlete. they tend to be small nerdy-looking guys and i would have pictured them more as gamers or artists. as for the women anyone over 20 who still has a nice figure i would have picked as a runner. now i can see the difference between skinny and fit. my point is that body type has little to do with athleticism because though you may be too big to be a runner if you are an athlete you will find the sport you can excell in.

PS your link doesn't work
PPS I have real friends and don't need google images.
Either of the Moulton twins. They look like 15 year old jv guys jogging around the start line of a race, then they gap you by 20 seconds at the first mile.

Peter Snell
This had better be a joke, though I'll grant that Snell looked more like an "athlete" in the American use of the word (i.e. fit sportsman) than in the Commonwealth use (i.e. specifically a runner).

Sorry about that--I tried linking from the post to the picture and it worked fine for me--maybe try copy and paste?
Anyway, I take your point about Williamson. He doesn't necessarily fit one's image of a runner...
The link worked for me, I think M. mallow's computer might be a little disfunctional.

i would say nate jenkins looks more "athletic" than 99 percent of any runners. people classify athletic looking to be big and muscular, not small and skinny.
matt tegenkamp. the guy just looks sloppy. case in point..
