Id seriously be willing to pay a small amount to get all my log information back....im in the same boat. I wanted to copy by data but never got around to it and now am regretting it!!! Just give me my log back!

Maybe it i just me but I enjoyed running-log.com thoroughly. I tried using running2win for a few days and, don't get me wrong, it is awesome and has everything that you could ever want on there, but I valued the simplicity involved with running-log.com. I have to say that I'm disappointed that the site would just go down like this for over a week leaving a few of us SOL.

As Mike mentioned earlier he backs up his site regularly and "treats it as if all of the info on there was his" because he realizes how important it is for everyone to have confidence that their log is going to be there. I'd advise anyone interested to go check it out as it really is a nice system. It just isn't for me and I'm not sure what to do now that running-log is being stupid.

I emailed the guy. He said he is trying to get it back up. He's also trying to sell it but a condition is the data is preserved.

Status Update (2/27/08 11:17PM)

As many of you have no doubt noticed, Running-Log.com has been having technical difficulties over the past week. I hope that this message will be able to address many of the questions that have been sent my way.

For the past seven years, I've offered this site as a free service. It started as a project in college so that I could learn various technologies and evolved into something bigger than I had ever expected. Though I haven't been running as much recently, I was for a long time the site's biggest fan and user.

When I became aware of the service outage, I contacted my web hosting provider. After some troubleshooting, I was informed that the database containing everyone's logs had been corrupted and no backups were available to restore the data. I've tried to follow up to get more details but the company has stopped responding to my online support ticket and will not answer their support phone line.

What does this mean for you? Unfortunately, I don't have any good news. With a corrupted database and an unresponsive web host, there's nothing I can do to retrieve the data. All of our logs are gone.

I'm as upset as anyone about this reality for two reasons. First and foremost, there are many runners that have lost something very personal to them (myself included). Secondly, I was beginning the process of transitioning the site to another online training log so that everyone would have their logs in a system that was being actively developed. Instead of improving everyone's online logging experience, the opposite has happened.

I sincerely wish that there was something I could do to restore your logs, but unfortunately there isn't. Please accept my apologies. I want to thank you for using Running-Log.com over the past several years and wish you many happy miles in the future.

The moral of the story is this

1. Don't use any online running log that lacks the ability to download your log into a readable and/or transferrable format

2. Once you are using such a log, download FREQUENTLY.

Currently I'm using RunningAhead.com, having transitioned over from CoolRunning's log. I like it a lot but I will not trust it or any other log. I keep a downloaded copy up to date.

Very sorry for all the folks who lost their data with RunningLog.com. That's a shame. Those of you using other service, get into the habit of regularly downloading.

Agreed. I built my own log using Excel that had separate calendar pages for each month, a summary page, weight, races, and some graphs. I print out each month ahead of time and pencil in my runs each day after a run and type them into the computer later. The computer does all the math for me, but I still have the original paper copy stuffed in a drawer in case anything crashes. But, I also use an external firewire drive to backup my computer's data every night while I'm asleep, so I am not so worried about lost data.

All of that being said, I logged onto running2win.com the other day and entered all of my 2008 miles into it to test it against my spreadsheet. I have to say I really like it. The monthly calendar view is like what I already have. I can see myself switching to it for good after a short trial period. A bonus is that I can log my miles when on vacation or visiting family as long as I have internet access with anybodies computer or at an internet cafe. I cannot easily carry my desktop computer with me during these times. Plus, if I get an iPod touch or iPhone, I can log my miles with that anytime/anywhere.

So if running-log.com was brought back with someone else running it and it being updated would people trust the site and would those who has lost data go back to it?

Yeah I had a look at running2win, it looked awesome. I was just wondering if people would go back to running-log after all the trouble? I personally don't use any currently, I designed my own on a spreadsheet a couple of years ago and use that but I think I’m going to give running2win a trial.

i don't know why there's dissatisfaction directed towards branton-he provided a decent, free running log. my anger is directed towards whatever PoS data storage company lost all of our data. if anybody knows the contact for this company (branton?), i want to send them an email.

F*** no. I don't think I'll ever use an online running-log again. This is F***ing ridiculous. I want my F***ing logs back.

Branton supposedly paid for web-hosting, so that company (ehostingbiz.com????) is responsible for the data they host. Things don't just disappear on the internet, it doesn't work like that. If they don't have a copy somewhere, their business model needs some serious work.

I don't care if the file is corrupted, the data messed up and out of order, I want the database file. I want whatever someone is willing to give me. Like a previous poster said I will pay to have this information. Let me figure out how to decipher/fix it if need be.

The more people that keep contacting Branton and the web host the more likely we are to get an answer. I am sure Branton is a reasonable and likable person, but right now people need more answers than his "status update." He had to have seen this coming, people keep backups, even really old back ups.

You can't tell me that your standard computer nerd couldn't go down to this company and retrieve data...whether it's in a usuable format or not. I don't care if it's every single person on running log's data/comments mixed into one. I'd go through and figure out my own.

Is this company actually called ehostingbiz.com? Do we have any contact info for them?

I went back to pen and pencil and notebook and highliter.

It seems to me that each running log web site can become a little cultish or something.

And reading everyones experiences with them it only confirms that notion.

If you pay for use of a site you don't get backup and restore service unless you PAY for it. How do you thing these cheap hosting services survive? If you expect full recovery services, etc, then it's more than few bucks a month. I use a fairly stripped down service for many sites I host and yes they do backups, but they won't do a restore without a credit card #.

Now here's a guy that offered something for free. In order to do that he had to use a minimalist (a favorite on letsrun) web hosting service. They may be able to do a restore, but it's not free. Now I'm sure he could go to a data recovery service and pay a few grand and get the database mostly reconstructed. If enough folks offered to pick up the tab I think he might even consider it. But keep in mind it was FREE, and that means the hosting was free or very cheap, and anything "extra" either isn't there or costs real money.

Nice to have Branton at least provide some information - finally but I just don\'t buy it. There isn\'t an isp that doesn\'t do regular backups- incrementals every day or so and complete every X days. This just doesn\'t sound right...

Sounds more like an attempt to run away from the problem.

I just wrote to ebizhosting to see if they do regular backups. Suggest all of us do the same and let them know that if they do not respond we will post on everyboard we know of about the irresponsible treatment of data by this ISP

Just saying that all of our data - 2 years for me- is gone is unacceptable. I udnerstand that the sight was free but Branton never asked to have his costs covered nor did he ever say that he was no longer interested in the site and tell his many users that they should transfer to another log. An apology just does not do it.
