My outdoor track was green in high school. My outdoor track in college is black. I've seen outdoor tracks in dark blue, green, red, light blue, black, brown, maroon, and I can't really remember any others. I've seen indoor tracks that were blue and yellow, green, red, and blue.
My point is that there are many different colored tracks, you need to get out more.
There are many exceptions to that rule, my school is another one. However, I think one reason maybe be the type of mondo. I believe at one point mondo's all-weather material was red and the less durable flavor that they sold was blue. Therefore a lot of older tracks were probably colored that way. Now you can get pretty much any color I'm sure, but a lot of new tracks probably keep to this precedent just because that's what they've seen for years.
how about differnt color lanes? West Point's indoor track alternates yellow and black for each lane (school colors). Their outdoor track is all red though.
Outdoor tracks are red for durability purposes. The lighter the color of the surface, the less absorbent of UV rays, which serve to break down the track. You want the lightest color possible without blinding people.
And how long will the shoe companies keep making them new ones? As long as the indoor tracks are red, white, and blue ones.
Everyone is ignoring the real question. Why are most well-known outdoor tracks red(i.e. oregon, every olympic track, the tracks for all major track meets)? Why are many well-known indoor tracks blue(Reggie, I don't know more examples but this is still the main question)?

There are lots of tacks that major meets are run on that are outside your color rules. A couple years ago the world championships was rn on a green track.

Blue outdoor tracks sometimes have problems with seagulls crashing into them.

yeah, my tracks are both blue, indoor and out. btw, this indoor season i have run on purple twice, red twice, and blue once. i don't know if you've ever travelled because they are different everywhere

black tracks turn into frying pans in the summer. Thumbs DOWN to that.
i've been on all shades of outdoor tracks.
also, arkansas' indoor track was red/grey when i had a meet there.
