I've been compensated for three out of eight seasons coaching (Ass. XC, MD/Distance Coach in Track) For a grand total of $4500.
I'm a saver though.

I'm a head track and XC coach and make $6,200 for the year (although like most say, I would do it for next to nothing).
how much does a high school football or basketball coach make? anyone know?
Experienced coach 15+ years
Private school
Highly succssful, multiple state championships
$3500 for head XC
$3800 for head track
7 assistants (yes 7, 3 frosh, 4 varsity) all at 1800 - 2200
100+ kids.
You guys need to see it from a different perspective. Some of my Ont buddies often say that they get 65,000 to coach, and they volunteer their days to teach a class or two!
On top of a stipend of $1800-2500 for a HS XC Boys only coach, what would you say if the coach charged $75-100 for a summer training fee (made to the coach) that would generate another $4,000. On top of this there would be another $3,000 from the overage, or profit, from the summer camp.
In total, the earning would come to about $9,000, which part of it would be split with the assistant coach.
Anybody do this....or allowed to do this?

I'm not sure about basketball, but head high school football coaches in my area make between $8,000 - $15,000. $10,000 is probably closer to the average. There might be a couple that only get about $6,000, but I also know of some that make $25,000+ for coaching alone.

I get about $2500 as assistant track coach. Head coach gets about $3500, and he has 3 paid assistants.
IMHO, head track should probably get more than head xc--more kids, more meets, more hassles, longer season.
Dang man!!! Here at the other end of the state, I pulled down an exciting $500 for head XC and $1800 for head Track (also the winingest programs at my school). We go raises after 5 years of coaching (with no more raises after that). It went to $580 for XC and $2400 for Track.
I need to move over your way;-)
Come on out! There seem to be plenty of track and xc coaching slots over here!
Damn. I got lucky.
I made $3,500 my first year out of college for coaching 16 kids (14 boys, 2 girls) at a private HS. I had an assistant coach, too, and the kids were awesome. Worked hard as hell.

I haven't been a HS coach for a few years now, but back when I was doing it in a small upstate NY HS, I was head XC Boys & Girls Coach at $1,800 (no assistants), then volunteered for 2 years as Head Boys & Girls Indoor Coach - then after 2 years started getting paid for it as it became more of an "official" sport at $800 (no assistants), and head Girls T&F Coach at $2,500 with 1 paid assistant (who made $750). In XC we had about 18 total between boys and girls, plus a couple of middle school kids, indoor track there were about 30 kids between boys and girls, outdoor girls team had upwards of 60. We were one of the top programs in the state for track. This was a public school and I was not a teacher. For the private schools in the area it was about 1/2 of what I received.
