Cormier was only good in high school because he was 19 when he won footlocker while doing 100 mile weeks , he wasn't going to improve much

young schiefer is correct. the rings speak for themselves. the current crop of john's lads may have the talent, but they haven't the marbles. i'll cite the most recent xc champs for legitimacy. it has not a thing to do with being american or not- take reuben, baker, lincoln, falcon, matt taylor, pat vaughn, eric henry, etc for example. it is a mindset that has been lost somewhere between mile repeats on the old golf course and brain busting workouts in the old barn. they all want the prestige and free kit, but are not willing to bleed anymore. it is a tragedy.
You're stupid ( the poster i'm quoting). I think any collegiate track athlete could excell in the modern marines or infantry. Yes its tough but seriously being an elite track athlete who trains hours daily puts you on a different level. Mentally it has its difficulties but physically it should be no challenge to him. The whole we are super elite attitude that comes with these guys who pass basic is over played. Most have an IQ of 115 or below and even after the training look like dough boys who can't break 18min for 5k or do 100 pushups
Any time a person equates athletic contests with combat readiness, they display plain damned stupidity--not ignorance, stupidity.
Running a 5k, 10, 1500, or whatever will be of no value whatsoever the first time you hear the word "incoming" or any of several other events that cause your heart to beat so loud you look around for the drummer.

There is nothing wrong with the military. many of us who were of average ability in EVERYTHING ended up there.

I will repeat for any prospective U.S. Marine recruits like Cormier. The Marine Corps does not want people who will run from a fight. The Marine Corps wants fighters who will stand and physically fight and kill the enemy. If you are that kind of person, you will do well in the U.S. Marine Corps. If you are not that kind of person, you will not survive recruit training.
You don't win 40 ncaa titles being a nice guy. John has a ruthless streak to him. And where you don't just take a scholarship from someone, you can make life so miserable for them that a kid thinks the Marines is better.
The marines will love him, he'll do great.

I joined the infantry as a private right off a university xc season and it was the best thing I could have done ...for me..not for everyone
he will do no workout in the MC as hard as he does himself.
Training has to be at platton level and the average will be much lower then he ever does.
The military also "makes" you run during working hours !

Wow, I really respect Kenny for following HIS dream. The easy thing to do would have been to stay in school and kept running even though his heart is not in it. I just hope he knows the officer options he is eligible for.

I saw a similar story a couple weeks ago where the freshman pitching star for University of Arizona left mid year to enlist in the Marines.
There are a lot of fantastic runners who join the military, and honestly the best enlisted and officers were great runners. Endurance is a key to surviving, and he will excel at that for sure. Not sure who the folks were posting that either think any idiot can join Marines, or think that his life is ruined from joining it, but I do not know many people who honorably served who believe that. Ask Wes Santee about his Marine career. He is just as proud if not prouder of his Marine career as he is of his mile times. Ask some of the guys who are running on prosthetics at the Army 10 or Marine Corps Marathon. You do not see much quit out of them, nor do you see much regret for giving so much to a country they love.
It was fun to represent my university in running Cross-Country. It was an honor to serve my country as a Cavalryman.
